I want to try learning illustrator, I know photoshop quite well and I imagine it shouldn't be that hard to learn. Can anyone suggest some good online tutorials? I'm mainly looking for turning photos into smooth vector art.

here you go:

But to create vector art, just place the photo in the background as a template (place, template) and fool around with the pen tool a bit to trace, and the gradient mesh tool to fill. Its really simple to understand, but difficult to be good at.

Thanks for that bro.
Does anyone else know a specific tutorial for what I'm looking for. I know the basics but I need a bit more to be able to do it well.

there are some drawing tools in Macromedia Flash that i like 10 times more than in Illustrator. but Illustrator's a good program to know inside-out. if you can work with Photoshop without any problems, you should be fine with the learning curve of Illustrator.

It takes some practice. You can't expect to be a Illustrator master after just fiddling around for an hour or two.
