how does this look for a mid range set up - able to play most current games? any changes that would (without greatly increasing cost) make a better unit? This is my first upgrade in years, want to get it right as I dont spend regularly on computers

AMD A64 3500+ cpu
Asus a8N-SLi premium
XpertVision nVidia 7800GT 256Mb PCI-Express
1GB Corsair PC-3200 DDR RAM, CAS 2.5
Western Digital 160Gb 7200rpm SATA II 8mb Cache

If you're going for a mid range system, I'd say step back the motherboard and go for an SATA 150 drive then put the extra money into a better CPU.

Thats a good call. IMO it would be far more worthwhile to go for a dual core CPU.

would this cpu be a good fit?
AMD Athlon64 X2 AM2 3600+ (1.8Ghz) 64-Bit Dual-Core CPU, 2x 512K SocketAM2 DDR2-capable CPU w/AMD fan-heatsink
or for another 40 bucks it goes up to 3800+ and 2Ghz

I have:

Nvid Geforce FX5600
Intel Pent.4 3 Ghz
Asus P4C800-E Deluze MB
2*512Mb Crucial RAM
2 hard drives = 130 Gig Overall

I think the graphics card is letting me down, am trying to play quake 4 but it just isnt smooth enough on even the lowest settings.

Am I right??

Cheers
Rocky

I'd suggest the GeForce 6600GT but I have no idea how much it is in the UK.

why wouldent he go with a 7600 GS? that would be under 100 pounds and it would smoke a 6600GT...
