Hi i am on a 512k connection, im in australia it seems that every server i join i ping at about 300....

Is there anyway to improve this as you would know i fire my gun and a second later the bullet appears by this time i am dead, do i have to play on australian servers or is there someway to fix this....

Please any help would be gratefully appreciated

- serious gammer who wants to play hard :(

Cheers

Ping times depend on your distance to each server.

To find out if it's a problem with the game or not, get the IP address of the server and, in windows, go to Start -> Run -> Type 'cmd' -> type 'ping serveripaddress'

If the ping number for the server there comes out significantly lower than the ping in-game, then your settings need fixing.

There are a couple of AUS people on this forum who can confirm, but I think it's not unusual to get shitty ping times when playing on non-aus servers. You're pretty far from everything.

yeah i thought that may have been the deal,

God dam aus. need more local servers!!!

so my internet speed (512K) is sufficient for a normal online game, if i was to play in australia ??

Don't you mean start > run > "cmd" then ping?

jdn1 your 512k connection should be fine for gaming as long as already stated, you connect to a local server and nothing else is hogging up the connection (ie P2P programs and whatnot)

And im sure there are plenty of local aus q3 servers around, if you download the all seeing eye program you can scan for servers local to you, or at least sort them by country.

Yep. But you need to ensure that nothing else is taking up your bandwidth as dave said. That means making a comprehensive scan for spyware, virii and trojans with programs like AVG (free.grisoft.com), MS AntiSpyware, or a suite like Norton Internet Security if you already own it.

Then making sure there aren't any legitimate uses of your connection happening at the same time, like other people in your house sharing the connection, or Windows downloading updates in the background.

Gaming needs a completely clear line.

Cool.....

I am on a wirless network we have 3 computers all going through a wireless router (54) conected to the server computer.....

If the other guys arnt using there machines but there pc's are still on the network will this slow down gamming also ?
Are some little packets flying out to them to check if there still there instead of upping my game back n forth ?

There might be a small amount ot network traffic across the LAN, but stuff that stays within your home network generally won't affect the internet connection at all. It's if those other PCs are accessing the net at the same time as you are gaming that problems arise.

Also, in my experience some wireless networks don't behave so fluidly with online gaming. If you could hook your PC in via a wire to test it out, you might discover that the wireless connection is causing performance issues too.
