Hi everyone,

I've currently got a crappy ADSL modem from my ISP but im not too impressed with it. Bascially I need to have access to things like port forwarding, DMZ and most importantly, sharing the connection with other wireless devices... (The modem i got just directly plugs into my computer via USB, theres no way to connect it to my router)

So i need to purchase an ADSL router with a built in modem. I'm currently looking at this: http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/94178.

Basically its ADSL2+ and I'm wondering if it will work with my current, standard ADSL connection?

ps ISP is Tiscali if that helps..

check the current modem's config page / cli list and post the standards / protocols / any login and auth types you're using.

I would suggest getting a router/hub instead of a router/modem for three main reasons:

1) If you ever go to cable you wont have to buy another router.
2) If your router goes to shit you can hook the modem up while a replacement is found.
3) You can usually do more advanced things with router/hubs

Its a very basic modem..

That would imply me having to buy a seperate modem aswell.. ITs unlikely I will go cable anytime soon

usb modems only support up to 4mbit, so adsl2+ will be a waste on your current modem

Well i said I cant use my current modem so I have to get a router with one built in....

edit: and im sure USB 1.1 tops at 12Mbps.

Seeing you have one VCI I assume you only have internet, not VoIP or video on demand. How does your ISP's DSLAM authenticate the modem (MAC address, built-in (in the modem) password/username, etc.)?

I've been given a username and password which was the only thing I had to set when I received my modem first hand. A friend of mine set up the exact same router modem with someone who's on Tiscali and it all works fine so it looks like im in the clear. Thanks though

I'm thinking it's a simple CHAP or per-session PAP-based login, probably handled at the windows-level in Dave's case but also automated by 99.9999% of modems on the market.

@dave, I think your choice should work fine. Make sure you have all the original information so you can transfer the settings sans ISP intervention.
