need help finding win98 drivers for nforce4

My hard drive died last night so i bought a new computer today. I got an ASUS M2NPV-VM motherboard (nforce 430 chipset).

Now for reasons that I don't wanna go into right now, I'd prefer to run this with windows 98. I'll use xp pro if i have to, but my preference for now is win98. Don't ask why, it's a complex issue.

I haven't yet put together this system so i don't know what to expect, but the manual says it supports win 2000/xp and nothing about win98.

Does anyone know whether the drivers will work for win98, or where I can find some win98 compatible drivers for this motherboard?

thanks :paranoid:

Can't find anything on it so far. But, I bet it's going to be dicey at best as most stuff doesn't support 98 anymore.

it's got nothing to do with games running smoother. I'm well aware than xp is superior on all accounts.

my issue is complex and i don't feel like getting into it now.

I will be upgrading to xp soon enough - i have to wait for something first though.

In the mean time, anyone have any suggestions?

Not really. Everyone else stopped supporting it some time ago and even MS now dropped it from support. Your best bet is speeding that upgrade to XP along.

ffs i have xp pro - that is not the issue here. If i wanted advice on upgrading to xp pro i'd ask for it.

Right now my concern here is drivers.

sorry - just very frustrated right now - the am2 sockets are fuckin stupidly designed with respect to puttin on the heatsink and i've bent a good few of the pins on my processor.

simply put, there is no support for it, they killed support for windows 98 back in the Startings of Nforce 2's ( or shortly there after ) So 3's and 4's are out of the question.

Explain why 98 is so important. Please, its killing me to know why its not upgraded already anyways.

mouseware 8.4 has a bug with it (at least when interacting with my USB wingman gaming mouse). You can get negative acceleration if you use the third notch or below.

See this thread i made years back:

http://www.quake3world.com/ubb/Archives ... 28974.html

For the last half decade or so, I've become very adapted to this feel in quake, and unfortunately, I don't think I can reproduce this bug in winxp.

Have you tried applying the disable acceleration registry tweak under xp to see if it helps? By default xp has acceleration enabled and it can screw up the way your mouse feels when you tinker with the speed settings.

Here is a better way to disable it (than using a reg. tweak), it 'hard-locks' the acceleration - http://home.arcor.de/_aero/projects/accelfix/

EDIT: The guy also has a tool on that page called mforce that apparently has something to do with negative acceleration. I haven't tried this one so I can't say just how it works.

There is also a way to increase the pooling rate for mice under xp, which should make them feel more responsive. 250hz or 500hz feels very nice. http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/US ... 05183690/1

BTW if you are going to try any of this, it's meant as a choice for running xp of course, the next time you decide to try it :paranoid:

Sorry man, but I think that's a pretty pathetic reason to retard an entire PC system.

Make the plunge, upgrade, get a new quality gaming mouse to go alongside your wingman, and spend a few nights becoming accustomed to the altered behaviour and feel.

I've switched between high sens logitech ball to low sens logitech ball (wingman), then to high accel logitech optical (Dual) to no accel low sens logitech optical (mx) and each time it's taken a few weeks to fully bed in, no more.

I can see a response along the lines of 'ah but it's different at my level/for me' and that's nonsense. You've convinced yourself of this with no real evidence. Just make the switch. It's as frustrating as hell for the first period of adjusting, and each new mouse has caused me to want to throw it out of the window, EVERY TIME. But perseverance ends up in the new mouse feel and drivers turning out better than the old one, every time.

Get a logitech mx518 for less than $40, or the razer diamondback (the one with 2000dpi?) you won't be dissapointed.

I intend to switch to XP once the creative fatality 2020 mouse comes out (i'd get the 1010 but there's a major polling bug with it).

For now will try a dual boot system - my new SATA hd isn't supported by win98 so will go xp for now, try to get the feel as close as possible, and if it's no good, will dig up an old IDE harddrive and install win98 on it (store where i bought my components said this would work)

thx for links re negative mouse accel - yes i know abuot disabling accel in xp - that's not the issue.

mouseware 8.4 actually has a bug with it which i've become very accustomed to. It's especially helped my lg since I can use low sensitivities, but because of the slight negative mouse accel, tiny movements are picked up nicely. This works in combination with positive values of cl_mouseaccel in quake.

It's a very complex thing - mouse dynamics - you can have different acceleration dynamics working in conjunction with another.

Interesting - you like the fatality mice because they have the same ergo design as the wingman gaming mice?

Oh bloody hell...it isn't "complex" and you're just overanalyzing something which is quite simple (again). Just upgrade and adapt, it won't take you long.

Learn2Play then

IF your so "good" a mouse isnt going to gimp you forever. Itll take a whole 2 days to get used to the mouse being "different"
