considering he's used several different programs i'm willing to bet it's a media problem or his burner is going kaput.

Try burning at a slower speed.
I burn all my DVD's at 4x.

so in other words, STAY AWAY FROM THE NEC 3540.

hm, that sucks. i have a couple of NEC's here at work (don't recall the model numbers and i'm too lazy to look), but they've been nothing short of great. :/

Strange stuff with those things. I have had a 5 year old cd-burner but a week ago upgraded to a dvd/cd burner by asus. The dvd burner wouldn't burn with easy cd and dvd creator so i had to use alcohol for it to work. Absolutely nothing changed settingswise.

My NEC 3540 have been working flawlessly for about a year now.

my NEC 3500 went south in around 7-8 months
NEC 3540 in 6-9 months around there..
both drives had the same problem, cannot do anything with CD's but everything with DVD's works
good think i kept my old creative 5x DVD drive just so i can read CD's
but like i said before, my next drive will be a liteon
EDIT;
this actually makes me wonder if theres anything else wrong with my system that might be causing it, but i doubt it and was very unlucky to get bad batches of the drives themself
