Christ, I think I need one. My graphics card just got damaged in this heat. It hit around 90 degrees ambient temp a week ago, and I was playing Prey with all the bells and wistles on. The actual gpu was hitting 85-90 degrees celcius. When I quit out of the game, my screen froze black. I could still click stuff, like my desktop icons and backround apps where still there, except just coverd by a black screen. Now, ever since then, my screen freezes every time I exit out of a game.

Geforce 6800 AGP 128mb

Idle temp - starts at 55 then climbs up to 68 on hot days without a/c
Full Load - I see it at 83 to 88

Will Zalman help a bit? Maybe a lot?

edit: I took the heatsink cover off, and then cleaned the fan and all the nasty dust that collected over 1 year. It ran a little bit cooler, but its still at around 58-61 idle.

try this first..
Go out and Buy Soem Thermal Greese ( artic Silver, or anything )

Take the Videocard out of the computer,
Take the Cooler Off,
Clean the Ram chips and Gpu With Rubbing Alchol or Nail polish remover.

Make sure they are Clean!

Clean the HSF with Nail polish remover as well.

Apply a thin sheet of the Thermal Compound onto the ram chips as well as the GPU itsself, then reinstall the Fan..

give that a Go and see if it helps the Temps at all.

if that dosent work, the Zalman would Def take the Temps down.

Not too expensive either. I thought they'd cost around 50 bucks seieng how its a good product in all.

I'm still going to clean it with rubbing alchohol like you said. Instead, I'm going to replace it with the Zalman after cleaning (duh)

Even with the Zalman cooler, you will still need some good thermal compound. Arctic Silver is the best stuff.

Make sure you put on a *thin* layer. Too much is almost just as bad as none.

Its supposed to come with some type of thermal compound. I'll look into arctic silver though.

i would agree with Obeidian, but i have also done some tests and the stuff that comes with the zalman ( i have about 8 pounches around someware ) is as good as a normal compound gets truthfully.

on my Cel D 2.66, AC5 only took off 1C at full load.. yes, this was after 24 hours, then after 3 days of the computer being on ( media center ) and it dident change to much..

So i wouldent sweat it, if you want to use it by all means, but it is not a MUST
