A friend called and he has screwed up his .dbx files somehow. When I go into local settings, app data, and look at the .dbx files in Outlook Express, all of his files say bob.dbx, but they are in an Internet Explorer looking icon.

When you right click on the .dbx file and select properties, it shows the "type" of fle as Internet Explorer. The opens with....is listed as Internet Explorer. I changed the opens with to Outlook Express, but it still shows as an Internet Explorer file.

He somehow lost this file from his settings so I tried the file, import with Outllook Express, but it says it cannot file any files.

I sent this file to my computer and it says it is a .dbx type of file when I right click and slect properties.


How can I fix his to be a .dbx file so it can be imported into his Outlook Express.

Highlight one of the files, hold the Shift key down while your right-click it, and you'll see the "Open with..." option again. This time, select the Other button, and browse to C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE. Check the box to "Always open..." (you can always repeat this procedure to change it again,) and the files will now open with Outlook Express. However, they should be available to open from within OE. Even clicking on the Saved file opens the program to the Inbox on mine. I'm not sure there is a way to positively open a certain .dbx file in OE.

I tried this already, but the files still show......when right clicked and selecting properties, the type of file is still Internet Explorer.


When copied to my machine however, they show as .dbx files when you right click and select properties.


I googled this and there were suggestions of a corrupt Outlook Express.

Maybe best to go into the local settings, application data, identies, etc. and save all the .dbx files and then delete Outlook Express, reboot and re-install it and see if I can import the saved files back into it.???

have you tried a repair install of OE yet?

Not sure how to do that

never use it myself, but i think you go to the add/remove programs window and click the windows components button (it's called something like that), select outlook from the list and it should give you an option to do a repair install. if that doesn't work, you *might* get a result from downloading an OE installer and running it.

Being that it is a Microsoft product, will it let me delete it?

I know you can't delete Internet Explorer.
