DVD Recorder + Integrated Digital Receiver

Parents have bought themselves a Sony DVD Recorder.
They've currently got a Sony CRT TV with integrated digital reception.
There doesn't seem to be a way to hook the 2 together so the DVD recorder can record digital programmes, without the TV being turned on? Also seems there would be no way to have the DVD recorder change the channels?
Seems like a fucking gigantic mess if I have to go and get them a seperate digital box. Any way to make this work, or is it as shitty as it seems?
TV/Recorder have smartlink, and we've been able to get the recorder to record digital from the tele, but problems as above still persist.
