I finally downloaded iTunes yesterday to see what all the talk was about, and soon after I went into mouse properties to speed up my mouse sensitivity so I could uninstall it as quick as possible.

Here's what I'm looking for:

1. An explorer style interface with a folder view to the left and a file list view to the right.
2. A tab or some switch that takes me from file view to playlist view. (Sometimes I want to see all my mp3s, and other times I don't care about TV Themes - Mr. Ed [First Version].mp3)
3. A way to rename or syntax correct all the mp3s... For example, some of the radio shows I subscribe to send out their mp3s as_annoyingly_titled_(file)[names][1](1).mp3 and I want to make everything as logical as possible in the way that I like naming the files. (Artist - Title.mp3)
4. The ability to dump them to an iPod Photo. (Optional, but would be nice.)
5. The ability to burn selected songs. (Optional, but would be nice.)
   Enhanced folder view modes, for example: If I have a big list of mp3s all in the same folder, ie TOOL - The Grudge, TOOL - Mantra, in the same big folder as Skinny Puppy - Neuwerld Order, I would like to be able to click a button that would display them as single files according to whatever their ID3 tag says the album is. Since Mantra and The Grudge both come from Lateralus, then they would be shown as one icon which would be the album cover. Then I'd right click that and select 'play album'... Auto-playlisting by checking the ID3 tag.
6. Basically, I want Picasa2 for mp3.
   
   
   Is there anything out there like that? iTunes is horrible.

Another feature that would be nice would be a convert to tool that would allow me to run a batch process of taking a folder of mp3s and converting them to mp3pro. It's not like I need all my audible.com shit to be high quality.

While I'm sure you're more qualified to form that particular opinion than I am, I don't think it really applies since I'm talking about a PC, and there is such a limited choice with Apple.

Thanks. I'm aware of the many mp3 renaming programs. Some let you choose if you want to take the file information from the ID3 tag, some get it from an internet database like the CDDB.

I disagree. I've knowingly kept adware on my computers for longer than I kept iTunes. That should tell you something.

I suppose the new Explorer extensions in Longhorn are a step in the right direction. I hope they do more than just add the mp3 player to mp3 folders.

Check this out... Longhorn lets you 'stack' data in explorer windows... I'm surprised I just saw this, since this is exactly what I want with Mp3s.

WMP10 does everything you want, but i'm sure you disagree running something that bloated. -- i tried it out whilst looking for something similar to what you are and decided it's way too slow >_<, meh
