Lost Computer: How exactly would you handle this?

Alright, so while I was on my way back from GDC my laptop began to crap out. I have a service plan on it with Futureshop so I took it up there to get looked at. It ended up being the port for the AC adaptor that was bumming out. Because it has only been since September that I bought the thing it is still under the manufacturer warranty, meaning that it needs to be sent to HP (nothing Futureshop can do about it, which pissed me off on a whole other level). The at FS explain to me that I should just send it to HP myself since the turn-around will be much faster (2 weeks Vs. at least 4 if they send it because it has to go through their warehouse first). I begrdigingly say fine and do so. A couple of days later HP receives my shipment fine and begins repairs.

Flash forward 2 weeks to yesterday.

I arrive home and find a tiny box on the table. It's an AC adaptor. I think "Wtf?" and go online to track my shipment, sure enough it says it's delivered. Starting to get freaked out I call HP. The girl on the line says "wtf" when I explained what happens and puts me on hold for 15 minutes. She comes back and asks if the box was tampered with, I say no and that the box is way too small to fit anything in it besides the adaptor. On hold for another 10 minutes. She comes back and says she put in a call to the warehouse and that they will contact me in 24 hours. I'm fucking positive they've lost my laptop.

Anyway, how would you handle this?

don't wait 24 hours. keep your complaint moving and write down the name and department of everyone you speak to. polite for people that actually do stuff, rude for managers.

as long as you have your shipping reciepts as proof I think you are golden. It should have a weight and tracking of the original package.

I have to say it doesn't sound like a major problem, more like a big nuisance.
Surely you can prove you bought it, i assume you have payment details and so on. It's probably just gonna take a while longer for it to arrive, they'll have to sort their shit out.

And just pray they didn't completely lose it. Be sure to bitch plenty about all your work data (all your money) being on that hard drive.

Out of curiosity, why did you buy an HP laptop? Did you get it cheap?

Bah, I thought you were asking for speculation on how people would have handled the computer and the count down on the TV show Lost.

Why wouldn't I buy an HP laptop? The laptop I wanted happened to be an HP.

Our company has mostly HP Compaq notebooks. nc6000 series to be exact. Worst hardward any of us have ever used. Mine is not quite 2 years old. I've had 3 docking stations, 2 displays, 3 motherboards and 2 (3?) hard drives. I've had problems with USB. Most everyone else here has had at least 1 docking station replaced and 1 hard drive within the laptop being about 1 year old. My buddy in the cube next to me had 2 hard drives fail within 3 weeks. HP Compaq notebooks, at least the nc6000 series, are absolute trash.

On the plus side, they perform well when they are actually up and running.

Yea, I've just never had any luck whatsoever with HP or Compaq desktop hardware. Compaq servers used to be great before they were bought by HP - haven't used them since that.
Anything else made by them though has always given me lots of problems - hardware and software - and most savvy people I know agree.

That's why I was curious - no need to get defensive. :p

Because I work on cars all day, servicing my own is the last thing I want to do, so I always just pay the money and get Audi to do it for me.

The last time they done it, they called halfway through the service and asked if I would like to spend another £20 having my Air Con deoderized. I said yes, and picked the car up a couple of hours later.

It was only last week, while I was working on my car fitting a new Anti Roll Bar that I noticed that while doing the service, they'd removed all the dashboard insulation, as well as all the soundproofing under the wheelarches and never bothered replacing it.

Fucking wankers. They gave me the insualtion back, and didn't even fucking fit it for me, I had to do it myself! They gave me a courtesy valet though.
