One former defense official said the military planning was premised on a belief that "a sustained bombing campaign in Iran will humiliate the religious leadership and lead the public to rise up and overthrow the government," The New Yorker pointed out.

What worries me most is that Hersh broke this story, he's not been wrong before about stuff like this.

- from the article
The United States defines "international terrorism" as activities that:

[...]
2. appear to be intended:
1. to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
2. to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrorism

so, in effect they're planning an enormous terror campaign involving the use of nukes - ironically the very thing they claim to be fighting against

I'm speechless.
The adviser warned that bombing Iran could provoke "a chain reaction" of attacks on American facilities and citizens throughout the world and might also reignite Hezbollah.

"If we go, the southern half ofIraq will light up like a candle," the adviser is quoted as telling The New Yorker.
No shit. Not to mention that all our troops are sitting right between Iran and Israel. Not that Iran is going to mobilize their military outside their country if they think we may attack, but it's always a possibility.

There just isn't much left to say. No matter how bad you think it is, these asshats will try and make it worse.

surely the principle reason for NOT attacking iran is that this would be an utterly unjustified act of aggression, rather than any negative consequences of doing so

Of course it is, but the fact that this war would be even more detrimental to our national security than the Iraq invasion raises it to a whole new level of stupidity and hubris.
