it's by far the best music player available. I've been using it ever since they fucked up winamp.

I originally got it because they fucked up with winamp3, and I also wanted something with global hotkeys so i could change song when playing quake.
With regard to the ui, get the columns ui plugin and have a mess about with it. Because 9.0 is quite new a lot of the old plugins don't work but they're getting on it, you can see other people's foobars here, it requires a bit of effort and intelligence to get it looking nice, but it's worth it:

eh i gave up on foobar, kept crashing for some fucked up reason when i was listening to internet radio. got sick of it and just went back to winamp.

well personally, I don't need a music player that slows my computer to a halt taking all the processing power to display some retarded visualisation with hundreds of different functionalities that I have no need for.
Its selling point is that it's not bloatware. Think of it as the utorrent of music players.

utorrent is actually pretty nice visually, one of the best i've seen. reminds me of emule in a way.
the thing I like most about foobar is the "tabbed" multiple playlist feature. from what i remember you could only have one playlist opened at a time in winamp. but this was a long time ago so maybe things have changed.
i also like the minimal interface, which, seeing that i always have the player minimized to the taskbar, works for me.
the search feature is also nice and very quick. it searches multiple playlists with the results displaying as you type.
the one thing i don't like about foobar is there's no simple way to 'refresh' a playlist. i base playlists off of directories, so when i add music to a directory, i have to update the playlist by 'clearing' it and selecting the directory again from a folder browser.

When I'm playing games it means if i'm playing music in the background it doesn't either fuck with the game, or make the music stutter.
I just like the fact it's basically a massive database of your music without any needless chaff added ontop.

strange. i've used WinAMP 5 while playing some QW online on my p2 233 without a problem.

When properly configured (and that's on a full install, not lite, altough I rarely use the visual stuff) Winamp 5 takes between 5-10mb of ram and 0-2% cpu cycles on my so-so machine. You start with colums_ui, album_art and file_info plugins, i can't remember their specific names, or which versions are going to work with foobar 0.9 and then have a look round the hydrogenaudio forums for other people's examples and import them, or you can write your own. I need to put half a day aside so I can relearn it, it's been over a year since i properly fiddled with foobar.
