I don't have one, and nore do I care, but you can run 'backup' games on it now.
Months of hard work have come to an end. The 360 FW security details were posted a few days ago already, so why not make it official It's been done.
Respect to all the people on this board who made it possible with their brilliant contributions:
Anita999, Geremia, Nayr, Bluecop, Interestedhacker, MacDennis, Phantasm, Marvin, Tiros, SpenzerX, Team Modfreakz, Fuzzylogic, Takires, loser, jasper, SMO, Groepaz, Zobyone, Jumba, Amadeus, Tser, DjHuevo, oz_paulb, DaveX, darkfly, evestu, Robinsod, Dark_Neo, Gael360, Seventhson, probutus.
Just for fun, here's a little video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyZQ4k7Bi-8&eurl=. And no, the team decided not to release a hacked FW. The security details are proof itself. The team advocates hacking, not piracy.

Well, that COULD bea fake.
I mean lets look at it this way... They could be booting up the demo for all we know

The disk spinning may be a copied music CD, because those work fine. They could have 2 360's, one for the TV, one for the spinning disk...
I hope its true though. Fifty squids a pop is just to much, even for fantastic games. Tesco have it right. £39.99 per game. Thats a great price.

£29.99 would be better....
The only thing thats holding me back right now is the price of games. My brother recently got a 360 but hes selling it as hes not impressed with it. He's willing to give me the premuim package with quite a few games for a cheap price.

Well, PS3 games are said to launch at between £55 and £65, so forgive M$ for charging £50 no matter how bad it is
I think this whole next gen thing isa bit expensive, and TBH I cant wait to buy the next mario and metroid games on the cheap Revolution, at a cheap price. At least I know i'll be able to afford the revolution and have fun at the same time without taking out a loan.

that would be a very easy fake to do the way they did...but who knows.

Nintendo is anything but cheap, Metroid was probably one of the more expensive games I've ever bought for any console system with the exception of steel battalion!

Gamecube games are expensive but the console is cheap as hell. The revolution is going to be anything BUT £200 and over dont you think

http://www.xbox-scene.com is saying it is real. They aren't releasing it because the only application is piracy. Doesn't work for linux or homebrew.

We'll from what i gather, its a firmware hack on the Actuall DVD-Rom Drive itsself, that would explain why he had to remore the top of the drive as well as the top of the Xbox itsself.
so that would lead me to beleve that the Security that is built into the Drive is bias to the drive being ejected ( very simular to the Swapping Mod for playstations )
so, i dont see how it WOULD be detected by live?
if the firmware itsself is Modified itsself, they would need to run a hash check on that each and everytime, and that is nuts. ( and time consuming )
So, i can see them revising the security on the drives for the next console revision..

Then the only prudent action would be to...
Run to your nearest electronics store and buy a current rev Xbox 360 before they're all gone...

oh wait they're imposable to bu. the few times i've been tempted to get one. No one has it in stock. I think i'll be able to buy a ps3 before a 360.

360's have been back in stock for the last month worldwide. You think your gonna get a PS3 at launch when theres only one million units world wide? Good luck.

The xbox firmware/software and rest of the hardware can't tell the difference between a burnt 1:1 copy of the game, and a legit copy -- that's the whole point of the hack. it fakes the mediaflag challenging, so the xbox always thinks there's a legit copy in the drive.
i don't suppose the DVDROM firmware can be checked from the xbox software? that really would be the only way to do it.

There's very specialised firmware for the drives, which includes having a one-way security code hash (iirc) built in so it can respond to a number of security challenges -- if it fails any challenges, the xbox shuts down immediately (but thankfully they're mostly at startup).
they posted the full securty run-down somewhere on xbox-scene.com forums... looks interesting, but they're not releasing it to the public for fear it'll be used for pirating games. naturally, it should be another month or two before modchips are commercially available.

Yes, but guess what services that request. The DVDROM firmware.
Xbox: "DVDROM, are you legit?"
DVDROM: *whistles innocently* "yup"
XBox: "Great!"

the firmware can be udated by MS any given time. if every game checks the firmware, chances are an update breaks older games. thatd be cool
