Website opinions

Just scouting for opinions on this web design (most importantly, the colours) before I progress any further.
http://www.onefootinthegroove.net/test/index.php
The original was:
http://www.onefootinthegroove.net/test/releases.php (ignore those images on the right, I overwrote them accidentally, and they were only placeholder anyway)
Talking to the client, they said the original (white) design was too minimal and corporate looking. They really like the new colours, but some other people I spoke to prefered the original. Let me know what you all think.

I like the new turquoise design over the old white one, there are too many plain white sites these days, and the turquoise makes the site stand out more, and thus be more memorable.
Good work

the header's too big, maybe stick the logo over the picture to save some space. folks aren't going to want to scroll to get to stuff.
make the top of the bar that runs down the left side flush with the menu.
colours could do with being warmer or more acid, one or the other. bit muted at the moment, that dark blue is nice.
what colour are the mouseovers going to be?
edit: just 2 cents btw, not rudeness

Cheers, some good points. I'm gonna resize the header definately, and that will integrate into the menu using flash. I'll probably shave about 100px off both headers eventually.
I think the colours aren't perfect yet either. I'm gonna experiment with that shortly and try and get something which contrasts a bit better.
Mouseover colours still to be decided.

A little too monotone. Add more contrast to the colors. Not NEW colors, just more variance between the shades.
PS: that header is way too big.

I prefer the white but then I see what the client means even if I don't agree about it looking "too" corporate. That said, the turquoise works pretty nicely.
Have you tried the header image from the white page on the turqoise? I was thinkning with the colours played around with a bit.
Here's pretty much what I mean:

Excuse the size

Yeah I tried that on an earlier revision of the site, and said i'd go back to it later. The white adds a lot to the design and gives it more variance. That said, i'm gonna up the contrast/levels in photoshop, and redesign with those colours in mind I think.

Looks very much like a weblog, which I think is very bad for this form of site.
I'd be tempted towards isolated cells of text, probably in the cliche monospace small gray format so beloved of the 'alternative' crowd lately.
I'd stay away from the generic blog/newsroll format like poison ivy.

I think thats just because its the news page. The other sections won't have a news script, and will be filled with "proper" content heh.

You could use the grate header and put the logo text over it... instead of having logo - banner - menu - content, have logo/banner - menu - content. it would save a lot of space at the top.
I knocked this up in about 30 seconds to show you what I mean, so i know it looks bad

Damn, I jumped down to 1024x768 and the header images are pretty damn huge. You kinda become ignorant to it at higher resolutions.
So far I will fix the following:
Colours
Header size
Anything else that needs a t'werking?

Oh, and gonna up the contrast a little bit more on that example pic I posted a few lines up too.
edit: re-uploaded.

Maybe add some padding to the news item subject and date line. Some breating room might help.. just one or three pixels

Ya know, I might actually remove the bgcolor for the date/header text entirely. Something about it is annoying me.
