In 1994, he attacked the very institution he would now join.

"There is no such thing as the United Nations," he said in a speech. "There is an international community that occasionally can be led by the only real power left in the world, and that is the United States."

Bolton, currently the State Department's arms control chief, would succeed the comparatively mild-mannered John Danforth, a former senator and an ordained minister.
Super! Next lets replace our Senate with all of our generals!

A previous US ambassador (not THE previous one) to the UN around the early 70s I think, Daniel Moynihan, was hired to throw a spanner in the works over the Arab-Israeli conflict, successfully as it turned out. He even bragged about it in his memoirs. Negroponte was of course, the US ambassador to Honduras while the death squads were doing their dirty work.

It's pretty much standard US policy to install someone who's going to be a saboteur of anything that goes against US interests. Bolton's just another identikit bureaucrat pressed from the same mould.
