Is there any solution for a glazed drive belt, other than buying a new one? It's functionally intact, but the squealing noise is becoming unbearable. It means I can't properly pose just before a crazy illegal street race. Nobody phears me anymore...

Seriously, though, the noise is painfully terrible. I spoke to a mechanic and he said that the noise should disappear after awhile, esp. when the weather warms up. I'm not sure I believe him, though, since it has steadily been getting worse.

So... any second opinions? Is there a way to fix a glazed belt, or do I need to replace it?

You should be able to find some belt dressing and adjust the tension to the proper amount. Even if you buy a new one you'll still want to make sure the tension's correct as that's probably what caused the problem.

Hmm... I thought I had originally seen them for quite a bit of money, but looking again, it seems they're not as expensive as I originally thought. Maybe I'll just go ahead and buy a new one.

@NS: I know checking the tensioner is a good idea, anyway... but would it effect belt glazing? (just curious)

Nah, it doesn't have any cracks and it's not worn. I don't think it's in danger of failing, it's just noisy.

I'd go with nightshades advice and make sure everythings tightned the way it's supposed to be if it's not the belt first... Times like this when it's a good thing to know a couple mechanics that smoke weed. 1 joint and a couple beers works wonders sometimes.

Dressing looks pretty cheap, so it's worth a shot, at least. I think I'll pick some up tomorrow and test it out. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks, NS. :icon14:

If you depress the belt in the middle of two pulleys, it should move roughly the thickness of the belt.
If it's anymore than that, then you need to tighten it up.
Usually a squeaky belt means that it's slipping.

The incorrect tension is what causes the slipping, squealing, and glazing. That's why it needs to be checked and adjusted. The belt dressing should help stop the squealing.

Don't have it fixed dude, you'll miss the squeeling when it's gone.
