Help!

Take-away food isn’t the best thing to live on, and eating it regularly while telling yourself that the rest of your diet is fine is no better. I decided to cut most take-away meals from my diet for a month last Friday.

No pizzas. No kebabs. No parmos. Nothing smothered in garlic sauce, nor anything with a side salad that comes in a polystyrene box that is only thrown in the bin without being used. I’m still allowed the odd Chinese, but with fish and chips also being off the list I’m left with a rather slim selection from the wide array of menus by the phone in the kitchen.

The problem is that I’m not sure it is possible once I’ve had a drink. I had a few bottles while watching Snatch on Saturday night, and half way through the film I was fighting the urge to nip round the corner and pick up a Donner and a side portion of chillies. I didn’t cave in – I had some homemade stir-fry instead, but it made me realise that nights out are going to take me awfully close to cracking less than a week into my resolution.

Walking home at 3:00am down Linthorpe road after tonight’s outing will be a nightmare – I have to pass over 10 pizza shops before I get back to my house, and every pissed up person I’m with will be chomping away on something I’m not allowing myself to have.

I’m not a fat cunt, I’m an 11 stone guy aiming to sort out his overall health step by step, and I have less will power than the 27 stone whale that thinks a healthy diet is only having three 15” London pizzas on a weekly basis. Do any of you mind-fuck people know of a way to stop the Pavlovian response I seem to get when I smell a pizza shop after a few pints?

Nope. You're going to have to go through some rough withdrawals for a few days....it's kinda like smoking actually. You can do good for weeks and then one night just blow out and stuff your face.

Something that might make it easier...

(1) Tell yourself that one night a week (and only one night), you can have some pizza or chili's or whatever it is that you really like so you don't feel deprived. You'll have that to look forward to.

(2) Carry a bottle of water with you everywhere you go at first. When you feel an urge to eat something, or see your friends eating, drink water. The point here is to "do" something. You can also chew sugarless gum.

(3) If you feel the urge to eat at home while watching tv, do five minutes of exercise while standing in front of the tv (best done if you're alone, lol)...and drink water.

What you really need to do when your mind starts with any craving (no matter what the craving is for), is to sidetrack or redirect your thoughts. Sitting there just concentrating on how much you want something without any kind of diversion will cause you to eventually break down.

GL with the cravings. They will lessen some with time.

I remember when I stopped drinking soda. I had terrible cravings for it for days but would drink a glass of water instead (which sucked). But it worked.

Or you could eat 3 or 4 pizzas and make yourself terribly sick and you'll not want another for a long time.. :)

Make sure all your money is spent by the time you go home.

If your pretty healthy in general, you can treat yourself to something unhealthy once or twice a week. Maybe arrange it so that the nights that you go out and drink will also be those nights where you eat pizza, or whatever. And leave the nights when your sober and much better able to resist those urges to be the nights when you eat 'healthy'. That is unless you drink every night, whereas in that case your getting so many useless empty calories and carbohydrates that the alcohol will make you fat an unhealthy just as much as the food your eating.

And keeping water on hand is a good idea. It will give you something to do (as mentioned before) and if you drink enough, it will make you less hungry.

Yeah, although I'm not sure why: the music in there drives me mad. I'm pretty sure that the DJ has one record box that lives in there and is never moved anywhere bar the Cornerhouse where he then repeats the same set on a Thursday. Still, for £1 a pint you can't really argue can you? :D

I didn't need to in the end, I managed to buy a pita salad instead of caving in.

Vomit. Eat fast food, let it settle then make yourself vomit. You get to eat the food you want but you wont take it in.
