whats the safest encryption for a wireless router? WEP or WPA?

To clarify;
WEP can be cracked pretty easilly if you can sit around long enough whilst it is being cracked (Takes a few hours IIRC).
I use WEP at the moment (can't be bothered upgrading my firmware to support WPA

) with MAC filtering (this allows only my wirelss card to access my network) makes is quite safe.
Some guy up the road from me has an open connection; and he must know what he's doing as his download folder has Linux amonst other things, nevermind

lol, I turned on my brand spanking new laptop and it immediately found 3 wireless networks, of which 2 were not protected.
gonna have to look into this shit, security is a very big concern to me. sofar, its rather confusing
