Playstation 2 problem... (skipping/slow loading times)

I have a Playstation 2 Version SCPH-39001 (fat PS2).

Some games have loading issues or skip. Examples:

Metal Gear Solid 3 (skips during CODEC transmissions).
Jak 3 (some cutscenes skip).

I've tried to clean the lense and it helps the problem somewhat but only for a while.

Should I try adjusting the laser even though I don't have Disc Read Errors or is this a bad idea?

A PS2 is one of the worst things a human being can invest in.

PS2's are notorious for this. You can try getting a small desk fan and putting it by the PS2 (I remember I did this with my psone back in the day, in the middle of summer, hot as fuck in the room but the psone was cool to the touch, no skipping) ;) or you can turn it upside down? Erm, on second though, that might of been a trick for the psone only, I don't remember. :paranoid:

If its a big fat ne, its out of warrenty.

Turn it over, take off he rubber/plastic feet, remove the screws. Slice open the sticker on the back.

Take off the top, be careful of the wiring to the front buttons.

Now remove the fan and power screws, slide the fan off.

Unscrew the screws by the front controller ports, remove this section so its hanging off.

Now slide off the bottom.

Next, remove the tiny screws from the top of the CD drive (Depending on the version, there will be 1-3 or so).

Right now get your hoover and a small paintbrush, and clean all the dust making sure to clean the fan and the heat sinks. Get a small disk clost and clean around the laser inside the disk drive (not the laser). Give it a blow, or if its really mucky, clean it with the cloth (make sure its lint free).

Replace, recover, and reseal.

It should be working a lot better.

The amount of PS2's I have to open every DAY to fix them is retarded. Iver never opened a GameCube or xbox however. Gamecubes could take a bullet and it would still work i reckon.

o'dium, I'm trying your suggestion as we speak.

Do you have any experience with using the white circle thing to move the laser up and down and should I do that?

Also, what kind of oil should I use for the tracks the laser moves on, because my PS2 sometimes makes a grinding noise.

TBH, i would jsut replace the drive. Its cheap enough and very hassle free. It solves 99.9999% of the problems.

Can you lead me to a legit site for buying PS2 replacements and decent prices?

i've never heard of skipping problems... but i have to clean mine every ~6 months or so, because it stops reading GT4.
recently it stopped reading all dual layer discs (even movies) so i did have to re-adjust the laser. (the plastic screw in the back) brought the laser up a bit closer to the disc and its been fine since.
the dvd drive in the ps2 is such a pile of crap.
the only thing worse is the one in the xbox360
