Xbox Shipped with 3 different dvd drive models in total.
Thompson, Philips and Samsung.

The Thompson drive was released with the first model xbox and (I think) some of the later ones too. It's the Cheapest one out of the 3 and also the worst. It WONT read CDR's, Most CDRW's, Most DVD-RW's and it's very picky about the DVD-R Media you use (if you do) and it's also the most likely to fail.

Whitedog only sells the Toshiba drive.

I'd shop around for a Samsung one, even if they cost a little bit more. They're the best.

Or alternatively, rather that buying a new Drive. You could find out the type of drive you have and buy a Lens Replacement (if you're up to it) off Ebay or Xbox Specialist Sites.
It's cheaper (about $25-$35)

Hey evo, your an idiot..

Thompson reads ANY dvd- and + media.. be it RWs, or Rs.. It reads

And guess what, Samsungs, are horrid.. they last longer, but there picky as fuck about media and theres multiple revisions of the samsung drives..

Ill take a thompson over any of them.. at least itll play both + and - discs, without any fuss..

It's a message. Your XBOX wants you to stop playing shitty games.

I had issues with my drive for a while, before replacing it I took the drive out of the xbox and removed the casing. The laser lens is easy to access at this point. Use Q-tip brand swabs, NOT CHEAP ones Q-tips use no glue at the tip so it won't smear on the lens.

Use rubbing alcohol and your breath. The moisture from your breath will remove an organic material the alcohol cannot remove. Wet the tip of the Q-tip roll it on a paper towel so it is only damp then fog up the lens with your breath and wipe and spin the q-tip over the lens. Rub one way and spinning the Q-tip in reverse, repeat this a few time with a fresh Q-tip each time. When you are done look at the lens at an angle to a light to make sure there are no streaks.

It looks like the plastics they used in the Thompson (I’m pretty sure I have the Thompson it’s been a while) drive outgassed from the heat of the Xbox. Similar to having a haze on the inside of your new car windshield in the summer, even though you don’t smoke.

I have a 1st gen xbox and had the same problems as well. I tried cleaning the lens multiple times but the problem always came back.
I found a broken xbox on ebay. It had a bad power supply but the DVD drive was fine. So it was a simple swap of the drive. Been wroking fine now ever since. And buying the broken xbox was cheaper then a new drive (at the time, not sure of prices now days).
