For the past week I've been tracking my girlfriend through her mobile phone. I can see exactly where she is, at any time of day or night, within 150 yards, as long as her phone is on. It has been very interesting to find out about her day. Now I'm going to tell you how I did it.

3G phones have had this for awhile... kinda like a GPS tracking device, you need to allow others to track you though, pretty neat.

We use this for tracking engineers, have been for months ffs.

You can't trust your engineers to tell you where they are? lol

I don't really like the whole security state thing but it does have a legitimate use for tracking kids and whatever down.

You'd be suprised how many engineers I get in the bar during the day sat there with a pint telling the boss over the phone that they are late for a job because they 'have broken down on the A19'...

I agree that this kind of stuff isn't new, but perhaps its just being made more accessible for normal people. Can be a bit daunting though, thinking someones monitoring your exact location.

Good point actually. I had forgotten that you have the kind of business where you have to know which of your guys is closest to a location when you get a call - like a cab company.

This would definitely be useful for that kind of situation. I just think there need to be a lot stronger safeguards in place to keep it from being abused.
