I was looking to buy a hard copy of Quake 1, someguy was selling it brand new for 20$, said it came in a flip sleeve. It was new and it's still cool but it's the shareware disc, I know you can crack it and get the full version though..... has other locked games on it as well..

No, you can't. The shareware version doesn't come with the assets the full game requires (textures, maps, models, etc.).

Actually, I'm pretty sure all Quake shareware discs have the full version on it, encrypted. If it's the id-released one, it does. If it's just some guy's disc with the Quake 1 demo on it, then it doesn't.

Actually you can on some of them. I have a heretic disk that also has ultimate doom, hexen, and wolf 3d full versions encrypted that you can call in and get the unlocking codes for.
edit: Mogul beat me to it while I was puttin this together.
Here's the one from the hexen disk I have.

Can't you fucking download Quake1 off of id's server? The engine is available for free isn't it? I think by that point id doesn't give 2 shits about profit from that game anymore.

No, you canonly download the source code without the media. Same with Q2 and Q3, but they're not free either.

We live and learn, we live and learn.
How much data is stored on that Q1 shareware CD? The full version weighs in at ~50MB while the demo is only ~16MB (IIRC).

Well, the shareware version on the disk is the same as the regular shareware, but in a different folder, usually called 'idstuff' they have .mj3 files which are encrypted full versions. So you would have the regular shareware version in one folder and the full in another that has to be unlocked.
This is the Heretic full version cd, but it has several other games you can get from it. I don't have any of the demo disks anymore but they had similar folders on them.

edit: the entire cd has around 90 mb. Heretic was only 14.

You can get anything free that way, what's your point? Yeah $20 is quite high for Q1, but comparing that to warez is like saying $30,000 is too high for a ferrari becuase you can steal one for free.

Heh, I'm just saying, if you see a game made in the last century that costs that much, there's gotta be something wrong :icon26:

I just wanted a hard copy of Quake 1, I like to collect computer games. Yes it does have the full Quake 1 as well as full hexen, hexen death kings, doom 2, doom 1, wolf 3d, heretic. I looked at my local stores first. They didn't have them. Didn't have an ebay account and I wanted a new copy of Quake 1, the cheapest one was 20$ and it was new. But yes, it is the original legit copy of Quake 1, not some cd-r shit.

They don't need to, you can download the Quake 2 demo and patch it and play it online.
EDIT:

It works for my point.
edit: ok then, It would be like saying $5 is too much for a 10 year old cd because you can download it for free illegally. That a better comparison?
