Advice needed from guitarists/metal types

Seeing as I'm actually a pop/rock sort of person, my knowledge about producing stuff in a metal style is pretty damn limited, so I was wondering if any of you prog/metal types could give me a few tips.

Here's the song I'm talking about

Any suggestions? Particularly for the rhythm guitars, as I'm having a bit of trouble getting the right sort of crunch in there.

Yeah, I know about the bum notes already (I played 'em), it's more about the sound.

I always had my rhythm guitars recorded with a clean crunch-sound à la Jimi H. It brightens the song structure instead of the tuned-down and distorted for the sake of it-stuff.

"TubeScreamer" is the way to go, put the mids @ 60 percent, not too much bottom and you're ready to go.

I guess what I wanna say is, the lead is not prominent enough compared to the rest of the guitars.
But very nice produced, Doc! My compliments! :D

I'm not sure what kind of tips you're looking for, but from my limited experience in recording, there's only two things I can advise you on:
  • To get a good crunch rhythm tone, I usually keep the bass and treble high (probably 70-90%) and turn down the mids to around 20-30% ... this produces the classic "scooped out" chunk rhythm sound, specially when palm muted
  • I never had good results recording directly to the computer (it ends up too thin and tinny sounding) so I'd definitely spend a lot of time experimenting with a mic. Amp in closet + infinite combinations of mic position (distance, angle direction etc)

Nice and weird song, a bit hectic at times though. Those lead guitar in the background could use more effects like flanger or delay to accentuate them a bit more.

Rhytm could use more bass, I like my rhytm to be powerfull when I palm mute.

Other then that, it still sounds nice, better then on my system. The best way to record guitars is to mic em, then go trough a equalizer and then to soundcard. Or you could buy some semi-pro sound card with 1/4 inch inputs.

Thats pretty cool. What I would do is make the main guitars (the lower pitch) jam out a little deeper (kinda like Korn). Then I would take the background guitars (the higher pitch) and crank them up to about the same level as the main guitars. I'll upload a track by Lam of God to demonstrate what I'm saying.

That is if you really want some metal. :hellyeah:

Actually the sample on their welcome page is part of the song I was going to upload. Now its not anything like what you have but maybe it will inspire you. Right now you kinda have this gothic death metal thing going on but these guys just pure fucking metal.

Crank up the overdrive and distortion options on your amp, then you're 95% of the way there. The riffs in the background are just power chords, and the solo is just a bunch of bends and pinch-harmonics over a simple melody. If you're getting anal about the sound, nobody here can help much, since your setup is rather unique. I have a Hamer Stellar 1 guitar with an EMG 81/85 pickup set in it, and my amp is a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I can get similar sounds out of it with certain settings, but I doubt it will help you at all. Just dick around with the high-gain settings, as that's the most important thing when it comes to that sort of metal. If you dont have one, you might get a BOSS overdrive or distortion pedal, which would possibly give you a little more drive than your amp alone.

Thanks for the input guys, I have a feeling that I'm actually just going to have to play the rhythm guitars more precisely to get the right effect. This metal stuff is hard!

How about volunteer work, then? Just get a sandwich board and stand around outside; show some commitment to conspiracy theories rather than just regurgitate them online to people who don't give a fuck what you think. Get out there and meet the public in the flesh.
