Building on Xbox 360 leadership in high-definition experiences, the company announced plans to deliver a new Xbox 360 external HD DVD drive in 2006. The new drive will offer millions of Xbox 360 owners the ability to easily enjoy HD DVD movies and will provide consumers with even more choices for experiencing high-definition content, in either physical or digital form.
more meat here

PS3 is backing blu-ray. This is sorta lame imo. They should of include the drive in the system.

i bet they'll come with the console after awhile.
just trying to give people some reassurance when sony starts touting 100 gig blu-ray feature on ps3.

Apart from, oh i dunno, final fantasty, which is 360 exclusive now, WHAT NEEDS THAT MUCH FUCKING SPACE?

Honestly, you kids keep on creaming over "blu-ray" like its the next big thing, but WHAT needs much space when you only have 512meg of memory anyway? Its either a MASSIVE game, far far bigger than any other game (i'm talking gears of war quality, except EVERYWHERE is different and no locations share textures, on a Final Fantasy scale), or its filled with movies. Either way, its gonna be impossible in the lifespan of the system or its going to bore the hell out of me.

A DVD or 2 DVD's, maybe even 3 DVD's if needed, is more than enough. Its more that you will ever need. So what the hells the problem here? £15 extra per disk on the price just because its the next big thing in media storage doesn't mean its the next BEST thing for gamers. Games are to high priced as it is.

I'm sure a lot of people would like to use their xbox or PS3 to play HD content (read: not video games). 100 gigs or whatever doesn't go far in that case...

Yes, but again, thats a DVD film. The PS3 cant play them because it stuck to some odd format, but will probably release a player like the 360 will have.

Its just odd... And for the mega rich. I cant pay for a £3k telly, and THEN pay for an expensive add on that lets me watch HD-DVD's, which there are only, what, 3 of anyways?

Its a good idea but this whole HD rubbish is so overrated, not because its bad, but because its so damn retardedly expensive at this time.

Rock on Nintendo, HD is NOT needed, and you know this.

A lot of people can afford 3000 for a screen, but that point is irrelevant to begin with. As far as HD being 'too expensive,' you'd like to buy a console that will be obsolete a year after you buy it? I guarantee someone will cry if their PS3 can't play HD content... Despite the rootkit fiasco, Sony's not that dumb

Yeah, we should all stick to watching our old tv content for the next decade. Who needs a new advancement in broadcast technology.

Given a few years, you'll be able to pick up a blu-ray dvd player for 200$ and a tv with 1080p for 400$. Relax.

Dude, where are you getting your information from? Final Fantasy is not 360 exclusive at all. The beta disc is being EXCLUSIVELY distributed through The Official Xbox magazine, but the game/franchise is not exclusive at all.

Hold on, i'll get the link. There was a 4 page spread on it that said Square-Enix signed exclusive to xbox from now on due to some settlement with sony that couldn't be met.

Sorry, seems i read it wrong, Hironobu Sakaguchi, the guy behind FF, is making games for 360, not the FF series is exclusive to xbox. But surely thats just as good.

So these blue-ray things... Are they gonna be in a case like UMD's are? Because if so, then fuck it, I hate UMD's. Unless you keep the disk in a air-free/dust-free locked up case, you get all sorts of shit inside the plastic thing :(

i'd guess a stand alone hd dvd of some kind will debuet before that time

Hold on...

If sony shunted HDDVD in favour of blu-ray, then why would sony themselves release a plug in HD DVD player...?

In other words, the only way to do it on a PS3 would probably be with a third party one. So they have to pay sony a feww to use it (Like the unoffical memory cards and everything on ps2), which will pump up the price. They will also be rare as hell and hard to get hold of...

Has the ball been dropped?

I bet there's gonna be an XBox360 rev.B with an internal HD-DVD drive.

The external thing is just for the suckers who bought it already.
