the concept is simple and basically a rip off of that movie thread. that music topic a few days ago brought up the realization that it's hard to find good full length albums now'n'days so i thought this would make a good music recomendation thread. i use the movie thread for checking out new movies so why not with music?

I'll start...

The Knife - Deep Cuts
7/10

Genre : Electro/Pop/wtfever

It's refreshing to hear something new and a bit more experimental for a change. overall the album is good but it definitely has its high and lows. probably the biggest plus is that the album has enough variety so that you can listen to it multiple times without getting sick of it--plus it's not like those where after hearing the first 2 songs you've heard the whole album.

Death Cab For Cutie - Plans

8/10

although lyrically it caters to a younger audience (low 20's) perhaps, musically it's good and diverse. going from a folk sound (I Will Follow...) to a 70ish mellow sound (Your Heart Is An Empty Room) all while being totally accesible to a varied audience. great stuff and a nice surprise.

Gang Starr - Full Clip: A Decade of Gang Starr.

genre: Golden Age Rap

Good production, a good duo of an MC and DJ, only thing is that it's a double CD...the guy has a monotone voice so it gets a bit boring to listen to going on 2 hours. Awesome beats though and good lyrics, as long as you don't try to listen to both CDs in one sitting, it's awesome.

Bee Gees - This Is Where I Came In

10/10

Genre: Pop

One of the best Bee Gees albums ever made. Great listening, also in memory of Maurice Gibb, it's the last album he recorded with his brothers. Excellent rhythm from the start to the finish.

Flaming Lips - Clouds Taste Metallic. 9/10, 'cos the second from last song's a bit dull.

depeche mode - playing the angel

it's pretty good, but not good enough that people who aren't already fans would ever bother with it. certainly nothing that hasn't been done better on past albums, even if it avoids the pitifulness of latter-day cure and NIN records. well worth picking up if you like dm, but the writing falls short of their earlier cross-over hits from their earlier years... with the final product sounding like the filler songs from violator and/or ultra.

spot on review that one, sir. i'm not so sure i'd give it a .5 even, but it's still pretty good.

thx. i gave it the .5 only because it's pretty enough that if you don't pay too much attention it can pass for music from any other dm album, many of which were fanfuckingtastic (imho).

agreed, and i still think its the best album i heard through all of '05. :icon33:

The last album I listened to was The Wall from Pink Floyd, so I guess that doesn't add much to the 'interesting' factor of this thread

9/10: Still the same geetar noodling that I personally totally utterly adore. Drumming by Mike Minneman - enough said.

Dr. Dre - The Chronic (1992) - 10/10.

Probably one of the only albums I have that I would give a perfect rating to. Although Dre is known mostly for his producing, his solo debut is definately the best West Coast rap album made. He was one of the first ones to take inspiration from the funk era of the 70s and put them in his beats, in addition this album single handedly invented the G-Funk era of rap that caught on in the early 90s. Hit albums like Snoop's Doggystyle (93) and Warren G's Regulate are all obviously inspired from this album.

Also, this is the first commercial album with Snoop Dogg recorded. Snoop didn't release his first commercial album until a year later, this was the first time people heard him. The contrast of Dre and Snoop is best combination of voices I've heard on an album...rap or not.

Up to this point, the main West Coast rap stars were N.W.A. and Ice-T...West Coast was in the gangster rap phase. This album completely broke the mold and invented/patented G-Funk West Coast Rap, providing a unique style that would be extremely popular under consequent Death Row releases and arguably the best thing to happen to rap.

Ayreon - The Universal Migrator 9/10
I just recently "discovered" Ayreon, which is the name of a project of Dutch producer Arjen Lucassen. He works with a lot of guest artists on so-called rock opera's. The style is somewhat between Pink Floyd and Dream Theater with some electronic music influences thrown in. Very diverse and very good listening IMO.

Anthony Rother - This Is Electro Works 1997-2005

Electro/2005

I was actually late getting into Rother, despite lots of good press and attention from fans. The first few tracks are from his earliest releases, which were gritty, dirty electro affairs. "Destroy Him My Robots" in particular is very strong. Sadly, the latter output just can't match his earlier work, and I was beginning to drift off, and got dangerously close to the skip button of a few tracks. But still, a nice retrospective of a decent (if overated) talent.

Cake - Prolonging the Magic.
8/10. It's my least favorite of their albums, but it still kicks the balls off of most everything else out there. I just got this one from my gf for xmas; the circle is now complete...

Fiddler on the Roof Soundtrack
6/10. Good, classic, bottle-dancing stuff. Even if you're not a Russian Jew. It loses some points for Motel's version of "Miracle or Miracles." Annoying, to say the least. Listened to this one on vinyl...

Pearl Jam - No Code.
9/10. Lovely. Makes a case for being their best, but not quite for me. Instead I might rank it as #2. Funky and folksy all in one. Great stuff if you're a Jack Irons fan.

I bought that album as well pretty recently...I've only given it one listen and thought is was kind of meh...6.5/10. I'm glad that they use Lucia in almost all of the songs, if not all of them because she has an awesome voice. But I've never been a fan of the songs they do in German...simply because I can't listen to it if I don't know what the fuck they're talking about...and 2 of the 11 songs on the CD are in German. Politically inspired tracks such as "Free Your Hate" and "New American Century" save the CD, but there's far too many songs that seem like they're catering to a high school goth audience with songs like "You're No Good," "Every Day's A Good Day," and "Ready to Blow."

The production though, however, is flawless. A new KMFDM CD is always worth picking up because the production is somewhat sophisticated. Sascha's talent alone in the recording studio is worth listening to as always. I'm also glad that Lucia had a part in most of not all of the songs. However, with the exception of "Free Your Hate" and "New American Century", I thought the album was lyrically lacking.

Mike Doughty - Haughty Melodic: 8/10

After listening to it, I was completely happy I bought this album even new at full price.
