I'm completely new to this. I want to backup a few DVDs of mine, any suggestions for programs that could be handy?

Alcohol 120% is one of the best to backup DVDs, give it a shot :icon14:
I think nero and some others do it very well too but try alcohol first, that is unless the movie you are backing up is larger than 4.36 gig and you dont want to dish out the cash for larger DVDs,
Grab DVD-Shrink and try it, you can re-author the movie so there's no menu and that other stuff, and it will auto compress the movie so it fits onto a standard 4.7 gig DVD+/-R.
Hope that helps!

I've tried about 5 or 6 different applications, and still can't make a fucking working copy of any of my DVD's. The closest I've gotten looks like a slideshow, with movie frames zipping up across the screen, looking lack bad tracking on a vhs tape.
Never tried Alcohol 120% though, I'll have to give that a shot. It's frustrating because there are so many options that I know jack shit about.

Would an ISO of the dvd work, and then burn it onto a new dvd?

DVD Shrink
Best methods.
You can use DVD Shrink to either remove all the extras or menus of the disc, or you can compress the quality of the menus and extras to as small as possible (if the original disc was over 4.7GB so wouldn't fit on just one disk).
Also, you can use it to rip out all foreign audio / subtitles.

But if you used MagicISO would it work?
I'll try it real quick (well not REAL quick)

What do you have to know in order to get them to work? Do you just use a trial-and-error approach on all the formatting options and such, and see which works for your dvd?

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive ... shrink.cfm should be enough

Ok you can use Virtual CD 4 to make an image that that program reads, burn it as an image onto a dvd, then use open the image in a virtual drive whenever.
Basically putting a iso on a disc, and reading that disc witha another disc drive that doesnt exist. Then use a copy program to copy the opened image from the v-drive to an actual disc. If that even makes sense

My guess is that your player can't read the discs. Otherwise, the setup and use of these two programs is very straightforward. I didn't do anything special and my 1st disc worked like a charm. Maybe get different recordable discs or check the +/- compatibility of your player.

DVD Shrink is all you need. It's really easy to use and it will burn the DVD too.

Uhm, no it won't. That's an option you get if you have Nero installed.

My burner was able to play the movies I have, but not able to copy them. If it can play them, is that enough to read them for ripping/burning, or is there something more involved?

so for backing up and burning, DVD Shrink and Nero would be enough?
(i don't need to convert it to Divx or Xvid)

Correct. DVD Decrypter might be helpful once in a while if DVD Shrink has problems w/ the rip.
