How much bandwidth does Evercrack use?

There's a basement apartment below the house I rent. Unfortunately, it shares the cable line with our part of the house, and there is this loser evercrack fag who lives down there.
I can always tell when he's up and online, because not only does the light on my router start having seizures, but I can't even load simple web pages half the time. I had to click the New Topic button three times before this page would load -- I don't really care right now because I'm about to leave for work, but most times when this happens, I'll just unplug the bastard's connection for a couple minutes.
Anyway, I know he's an Everquest junkie, but could that really be what's using all the bandwidth? I don't know anything about it, but most games don't use nearly enough bandwidth to max out a cable connection.
Or is he just downloading gay porn all day?

Yep, the graphics on that things are pretty intense, at least they were years ago when I played and by intense I don't mean good, I mean it definitely adds a lot of lag when you're playing.
It might just be the pc causing machine lag though rather than internet lag so I never really tested to see which it was. I always suspected it affected both to be honest.

I'd ask him if he's got all the graphics settings maxed out or if he's got them at a minimum for performance.

wtf, what do graphics settings have to do with network bandwidth?

I don't think Everquest works that way. And with Guild Wars, that is only once for every region, and the download shouldn't take
too long, and once it's done it's done, so it can't cause constant maxxing out of the connection.
My guess is that Everquest doesn't have much to do with it. Try to figure out if he uses something like BitTorrent, because BT can really cripple a network if it isn't configured properly.

Normaly nothing but when you're in a room with 45 people casting spells that each have their own unique effects I would be very surprised if that didn't add a little more lag to a network. Something has to be sent to the computer to tell it to display that effect around that person right?

I try not to talk to the weirdo anymore than I have to.
He had been renting the place with two other guys before we moved in there. When we came over to look at the place, he was in one of the upstairs rooms glued to the game with all the lights out, and it didn't look like he'd seen the sun in months. His lease had already expired, but the landlord was letting him stay until he found another place. Well, he never found another place, so when we moved in, the landlord rented the little basement apartment out to him, unbeknownst to us until later.
The place isn't really a finished apartment. I mean, it's finished out, but it doesn't have its own cable or ventilation. We also weren't aware of that until later. When we found out he was getting some of the heat and A/C we were paying for, we made him tape off all his air vents, and now we're splitting the cable bill with him.
So he's basically living in this basement with all the windows blocked off - he works nights at some old folks' home or something - apparently just because he was too lazy to find another place.
Unfortunately the cable bill is still in his name, so I can't do anything more than unplug his ass when he starts hogging the connection - but I think I've got him talked into transferring it over into my name. After that he can kiss his Evercrack marathons goodbye unless I can find some cheap way to throttle his part of the connection.

Well, I have the router upstairs in my office, and I'm not forwarding any BT ports to him at all, so that can't be it, can it?

Why don't you just get your own cable and let him keep his?

You can run EQ on a 56k modem, i doubt its the cause.
More like the pr0n he is probably downloading. Since you have the router you should limit the bandwidth to his IP.

bt works without having to open ports. it just crams the network then so thats a lot of fun

Illegal dwelling probably, judging from the descriptipn of the apartment.

And I'm only going to be there for another 4 months, and don't want to pay a fee to get a separate line run to the house, which is something the landlord should pay for.

I don't think so - he has his own electricity.

Hmmm. I'd like to, but my router doesn't support bandwidth throttling as far as I've been able to find.

Oh that's great. I didn't realize that.

does it do any sort of logging/diagnostic stuff?

What?
The guy stole my gas heat for more than a month without telling me, is completely anti-social, is too fucking lazy to find a decent place to live, and uses so much of the internet connection recently that I can't even load small simple web pages much of the time.
You're the one who doesn't know him so WTF are you on about?
I don't know what I've said to you, but this boner you've got for me lately has got to stop. It's like the Seinfeld episode where George falls in love with the cool guy that's dating Elayne. You wanna fix me some sandwiches or something?

Very minimal unfortunately. I haven't been able to see what ports or applications he's using at all.

hey i really dont care what youve "called/labeled" me in the past and you have.
my point is trying to make you think about some of the stuff you say.
i have my opinion about the way you grade others.

Well you're going to have to be more specific than that, because it sounds like you're just attacking me.
edit: And I haven't 'called' or 'labeled' you anything. We used to play q3 together all the time - ggs - and your posts used to be pretty funny. So I still don't know what you're on about now.

if you view a tiny bit of constructive citizem as being "attacked" that might be a starting point of some concideration.
