they are shielded but in the manual they always say to keep it 3 feet or so from tv's and stuff.

Short exposure shouldn't cause any long term damage, but it's definitely not a good idea. I suppose it's possible that it could cause some weird problems.
Put any speaker next to a CRT TV and watch what happens. No, they aren't shielded for shit.

lol, reminds of somewhere i worked where some girl put a desk fan next to her CRT and it started warping the picture. even the IT guy she called up couldn't figure out what was wrong

I didn't think the magnetic field would be strong enough to cause an issue the way it was all set up. I wonder if there is a device I can use to measure the magnetic field around objects like speakers and whatnot...hrmm.

Anyhow, this means that the 360 will go in the entertainment center on its own shelf...but I am a bit concerned about air flow and ventilation through there. the door will have to be open when I am using it, and I am going to have to put some more ventilation holes in the back panel of the shelf the 360 is on. The thing gets hotter than hell. I am also going to try and rig a fan or two (case fans or something) that will help encourage air flow on that shelf.

So there's my next question - any fans that people might recommend for this?

get some cool led ones that flick on when the xbox comes on

And before you say something else stupid, yes I know compasses are affected by magnetic fields. He knows there's a magnetic field around the speakers, genius, and that's all a compass would tell him.

Yeah I've had things like speakers make green areas on my tv over a couple of years.

Not only damaging your TV or other peripherals equipment but also your VHS cassettes and worst, your credit card. Well I think you knew about the credit card part but did you know that carrying it in a purse that has a magnet type of a secure snap on it can make it invalid?

Even if it were properly shielded you are dealing with a subwoofer which means you're going to be subjecting the console to a lot of vibration.

Why do you have the sub in your entertainment center anyways?

It's not in the entertainment center. Its next to it, with the xbox sitting on top of it. Or at least it was sitting on top of it.

Thanks pete, but this isn't what I was asking. I'm well aware of magnetic damage to the TV and the magnetic strip on the backs of credit cards...I was referring here specifically to this console on the top of the subwoofer and whether or not the field, in the configuration described, would be strong enough to damage the Xbox possibly.

I want to MEASURE the magnetic field...not just see if one is there or not. And not measure it in terms of "wow...that really moved the needle...and that one didn't as much..."

probably just going to check our physics storeroom...I ordered a bunch of different probes and whatnot last year, I wouldn't be surprised if something like that is in there.

Should work fine. Unless you want to go to the extra effort of making a bunch of calculations from measured distances, that is.

I wouldn't be worried about the magnetic field around the sub but instead the potential damage caused from the physical vibration of the sub...

I keep the sub very low...but the warnings I got weren't about the vibration as much as about the magnetic field damage..
oh well, its off it now, so its a non-issue.
