music resolution

one of my resolutions is to get back into "traditional" music (traditionaln by the virtue of being mostly vocal song arrangements btw)

for about 3 years now I've mostly exclusively bought IDM type CDs - instrumental work by single producers - I want to expand back into decent vocal music aswell as am getting a little jaded and want more variety back in my collection ..

any tips - btw must caveat that with any tips that don't involve chart shite

ideas welcomed - ta

You can always check out the http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/ best-of charts. Lots of obscure stuff to keep the indie-kids pleased.

PF are still cunts though. But they did do a good feature on the detroit techno/chicago house people a while back, which was a great read.

Oh, and checkout Cocteau Twins - Lullabies to Violaine if you haven't heard it. I'm sure you know who they are.

The Weakerthans - awesome Canadian band with great lyrics
The Essex Green - sounds like an American Belle & Sebastian
Belle & Sebastian - the ultimate twee indie band of course
Badly Drawn Boy - great British singer/songwriter
The Magic Numbers - absolutely beautiful modern folk rock
Built to Spill - guitar based DIY band that's very intricate and likeable

All of them are more or less indie, most producing their own albums and publishing them on their own labels.

Sorry to drag this back to IDM/Electronic talk, but have any of you blip-de-bloop lovers listened to The Flashbulb - Reunion?

I'd like some more opinions on the album.

yes .. its a poor []pusher rip from the 3 listens i've given it tbh - its ok though - hes part of that whole edit crowd - on that note you shold prolly check out the edit cd - much nicer and a bit more intricate programming - if you like that kind of thing anyhoo

I'm really into the more emotive stuff, as opposed to the technically impressive side of the genre (I know that's a bad description but you get the idea).

I really rate the tracks Sangari 7 and Going Brown Again. That should give you an idea of the kind of thing I'm into.

There's a distinctive cross on that section of the genre which interlaces with the pop indie stuff, and I dig that too.

I'll chex out what you suggested though, thankssss

because i dont really like death cab? postal service and death cab have two completely different sounds. plus pretty much all of their earlier material sounds like crap to me. their latest album is somewhat decent i'll give you that. even then though there's only like 2 death cab songs i actually like so i didn't deem them worthy.

bah, the whole album is great - which is rare nowadays with everyone (consumers inlcuded) moving towards a "singles only" mindset and perhaps future business model.

i've noticed that as well and it really disapoints me. but i've also noticed that the artists that tend to stick around the longest and end up being more succesful in the long run dont always have that mindset yet which is nice.

btw another band worth checking out is She Wants Revenge. i've only gotten through the first 4 songs so far and have yet to hear one i dont like.

well you let me know when you've gone through the entire album and have something good to say about it. ;)

I resolved to get 1000 artists in my itunes library by the end of the year. I seemed to lose some when transferring stuff to my new PC so I'm still only on 972. So I'm now researching some of the names as you people have provided. Like She Wants Revenge.

However something is bothering me. I don't want to say revenge, I want to say rewenge.

RAY-WEN-GAY!

Why? I'm sure I heard it in some movie or something. Can't place it though.

well the whole album is pretty good. it's one of those albums where you could possibly go out and buy it without hearing the whole thing but you might want to at least sample the songs through amazon or something if you can.

they have an interesting sound. it's almost like a fusion between fischerspooner and franz ferdinand. my favorite tracks are I don't Want To Fall In Love, Monologue, Us (this one sounds like a bowie song heh) and Red Flags And Long Nights.

they only thing people might not like about these guys is that their songs might seem a bit repititious, particularly if you just skip through them and dont let them play all they way through.

you can actually listen to 4 of their tracks onmyspace
