Q4 demos boring to watch?

I don't quite know why but I think it's various things that make me kind of yawn watching even the great players. I watched a cooller demo on phrantic. It was pretty boring.
I'm sorry to compare to Q3, but I need to for purposes of the thread. Take pro-dm6 for example, it's exciting to see a player get RA and then immediately do a cool rocket launch to the bridge and get to the RL in the blink of an eye. Cooller used to do that a lot and its exhilarating to see. The bridge to rail jump was always fun to see as well, a nice shortcut if you can make it without falling ( most do of course but even daler fell a few times in one demo I saw which added to the tension). People tell me the movement in Q4 is as fast as Q3. Well that may be true, ( although it still feels slower to me), yet I don't really see that kind of speed when watching players, I don't get a rush from seeing them take huge bounds and leaps. Or maybe because the movement is a bit 'lumpy'? Anyway, watching q4 demos generally seem a bit uneventful. Anyone else of the same opinion?

So, q3 has been out for, what, 6 years? Q4 has been out for about 2 months.
Give it some time already you impatient brit!

I know, people tell me that too. It's a fair comment.
I just can't see it though. If I came into the quake series right now having never played any of the previous ones, it would probably be fine. But I've been spoilt with Q3.

I think its mostly just due to the maps really. I watched the cooler/hunter demo on phrantic and it wasnt bad imo. The GGL Americup should bring out some decent demos.

Drum, in order to stop your moaning, I'll give you a 1v1 on ZTN: you can relive the old days all over again without me being kicked as I've got around to updating at last. :icon25:

The cooller vs Hunter demo was boring because it was so much spam, but that goes for the fat vs cha0 t4 demo that was mentioned lately too. They empty their RL's by shooting through door openings, waiting for an armor/MH to spawn.
There were some exciting moments in the cooller demo though; imo his LG was great.

That might be the hitbox thing with Q4 too though; in a Q4 tourney i played yesterday it seemed incredibly easy to hit rails and shaft.

pro-T4 was a masterpiece..and just because you loosers got spanked hard each time you played it doesnt mean it wasn't a good map..you can run but you can't hide in pro-T4..pussies play zzztn

Only in your dreams princess.
Either way I agree t4 was just as good a map as any.

Fox vs Toxic at Dreamhack. Probably the best q4 demo I've watched so far, although tbf, that's not much of an achievement atm.
Jesters right about the maps being a major factor though, as they really do suck ass and no amount of item placement changes will save them.
They allow no flow at all, and the fact you can't strafe on stairs atm only makes it worse. There were too many remakes shipped with the game, and the original maps make for decent FFA and nothing more.
Should only be a matter of time before we see some decent custom maps released, and won't be too surprised if the shipped maps are removed from tournament play completely. That, coupled with players getting used to the new physics should make for more entertaining demos in the future.
If id/Raven get the first patch right and the mod teams deliver sooner rather than later, it may not be too long before q4 is at the same level q3 was at it's peak. Keeping everyone interested until then is probably the bigger challenge.

hmm I cannot see why a q4 demo 'should' be more boring than a q3 demo (in principle that is)
maps have to play a part - we want maps with 'cool' jumps and moves for people to do, then i guess we need to wait while people get used to the moves and jumps so they can be executed efficiently enough to be a viable option in games that mean something.
Perhaps the newness and dare i say nervousness results in boring games atm - hopefully things will improve ( I also blame mods like 3wave for getting people in the spam habit :icon32: )

drum it's too early. q4 is still in noob stages.
watched a demo of thump4 vs daler last night on galang. t4 kept fucking crouch-sliding on every corner on lower level from MH to RA. there's no way that's faster than strafing. see what i mean?
note: he claims to have invented crouch-sliding, or thump jumping, so i guess for that to be true he has to do it all the time? wtf?

Boring spam demo with only a few short fragging streaks that are interesting to watch. I expected more from aim monster Toxic tbh. Maybe he's out of practice...

Heh, I'll have to check out that demo prince, and I haven't downloaded galang yet.
Yeah I think the maps are largely to blame as well.
phrantic doesn't have rail either and let's face it, we all love to see great rail frags. pro t4 is indeed a masterpiece and I also think ztn and dm6 are.
I never played Q1 or Q2 online so I don't remember the maps, though I know the edge was from Q2. Looking back at those games, I'm interested to see if the most popular maps were all out of the box ? I know q3dm6 was made into pro-dm6, but it was still basically out of the box, just tweaked, right? The basic layout is still the same. Yet it became the most popular map, not just for duels but for tdm and ffa. So it's an all round great map. And was the edge the most popular map for Q2 duelling? Was there also a stock out of the box map for Q1 that became the most popular? If the answer is that all these games had the best duelling maps straight out of the box, then that kind of says that a pattern has been broken in the 4th installment of the quake series. Whether that's good or bad I don't know. But yeah, custom maps seem to be the only way forward.
..*waffle waffle waffle*..

I dont feel the love for rail you seem to think I feel.
