I've heard good things about these games..but the learning curve is supposed to be steep. Is that true?

i loved civ2 but they changed things in a way i didn't like in civ3 so i gave up on it

dunno about civ4 but civ in general is the best empire-building game out there. beats the crap out of AoE , empire earth, rise of nations, all the RTS's

Red Alert rocked my world better than violent sex with two women.

civ 4 is the best game of the year. let me know if you ever wanna play multiplayer.
and the learning curve is nothing. play a couple games on the settler setting and you'll be all set.

meh, I tried playing my uncle's copy for about 5 minutes.... I couldn't stand the 3Dness of it. Yea, it was pretty, but it was too much.

I'll stick to Alpha Centauri... I still have yet to sit down and play that for an extended period of time.

I've been playing for about 3 hours total and really feel like I have no fucking idea what I am doing. JUst keep making new towns, having workers make shit, and researching random stuff. There is no rhyme or reason to anything I am doing right now...

At what point do you start to understanding what things you want to do, and why you want to do them, so the game feels like it has a bit of purpose?

Any suggestions from civ players would be appreciated.

decide a goal for yourself, both a winning condition and short-term goals. dont go about creating units and building roads when you have no goal

also, whenever you research something youre pretty sure of youre the first one to research it, start a diplomacy with the other leaders and sell it to the highest bidder. youd be amazed what some of them will offer for something as simple as monarchy

give me an example of a goal...or a winning condition.

Conquest is a pretty basic goal.

You could also go for cultural... be the one to have the biggest and best cities.

I hope they release a mac version (if they haven't already) because I just dropped about three grand on a camera and various lenses and don't have any cash to spare for a pc upgrade

So basically I decide that by the end of the game I want to have "conquested" everyone...?

And then just work to do that?

What I don't get is really how to pick a strategy for doing one thing...I'm overwhelmed I guess you could say...there is just so much shit to do.

the victory conditions are:

cultural: get 3 legendary cites - e.g. 3 cities with a cultural rating of 50.000

conquest: your civ's territory must be 75% of the world AND your pop must me 40% of the world pop

domination: kill everyone else

scientific: be the first to man a succesful spaceflight to Alpha Centauri

diplomatic: become the world leader by being the head of UN. get the other civs to like you, propose bills and get the most votes. these bills can drastically change gameplay btw (things like Geneva Convention, no nukes, 1 currency, et al).

also, as it pains me to say this, ESTABLISH A RELIGION. other civs with the same religion will like you more, wont attack you as fast and you'll be rolling in dough before you know it.

choose your civics wisely. while Fascism is great during war time, its also quite expensive. Enviromentalism might make your people quite happy and healthy, it will also get you in debt in no time.

Oh btw, my favorite approach to this game is not to think of which angle to focus towards to win the game. Just rule your country like you would in a real world enviroment and deal with political issues as they come as you would deal with them and see how things go. I always found negotiating with the other countries fun because of the way they acted. Deadly game anyway... I wish there was like an online version of a civ game. Even sim city would be fun...
