I'm afraid of how expensive the media will be.

If it's less than a 300GB hard drive, then who cares right? Seriously it will be cheap eventually, just like RW DVD's that went from $50 to $0.50.

Exactly. DVD-DL is too expensive for regular use ATM, so this will be ridiculous. Still, it will be a good option to keep an eye on as things develop. However, it may be too far ahead of its time, because one disc will be ~2x my hard drive space, so I'll not need that media for pretty much anything. By the time I do need to back up 300GB of data, there will be other options out there.

im glad they're coming up with this thing. why? because i don't particularly like or care for hd-dvd or blu-ray.

they are coming out too soon and arent that much of a jump from the regular dvds IMO. i'd rather wait until there is something thats very different and will actually move the market (like VHS to DVD). screw the laserdisc or Digital-VHS stuff. i dont want to be pressured by companies and whoever else to get the new laserdisc.

the more split up the market becomes (with hd-dvd/blu-ray/whatever this thing is if it ever comes out), the more it will crumble all three formats. sooner or later (hopefully later), a really nice, very different format will come out that really is much better than all others.

Hope they won't slap some DRM stuff on it.

sorry, this won't do anything to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. studios will not buy into it. great for nerds, but not many others.

jugg's, cmon, Look a tthis in retrospect. .

DVD the same was said with DVD's when laserdisk's/VHS's where around. they finally caught mainstream, and people are allready pushing Multi DVD movies and etc.

the same thing will happen with Blu-ray's and HD-DVD's, sure this technoligy will not be the NEXT BIG one, But it certanly will sit on the backburner untill Blu-ray or HD-DVD has had its time.

Personally I think both Blu-ray and HD-DVD are going to flop. It happened with laserdiscs and it happened with minidiscs. Consumers have finally upgraded to DVD and I don't think they will be willing to switch their hardware again so soon, especially if they are going to need two players in order to play both formats.

Blu-ray sounds too cool to flop...

I've had a DVD player in my computer for the past 6 years, and I'd be willing to shell out some cash for a drive with blu-ray support if it also has DVD burning and CD burning capabilities.

You're not one of the average consumers though. Most of those people just upgraded to DVD in the last couple of years.

no, they'll catch on. no sense in having a HD ready set and not take full advantage. also, there will be players that support both formats.

I agree that they will initially flop in the TV consumer audience. But I think they will thrive among computer users as long as its inexpensive, say less than 50cents/gig. Later in mebbe 3 years when there will be a 30:1 ratio of LCDorPlasma to CRTs, almost all consumers will own hi-def flat screens and then the hi-def video will be a logical step and nice to have.

It will take time but it will happen...eventually.

and remember DATs?

300GB disks won't be used for backup anyway. more likely they'll finally be able to release movies in uncompressed format. they look ok on DVD9 but they're massively compressed from original master

indeed, uncompressed Video and audio in 7.1 or more..

this will prob be the nich that this technoligy will be put in.
