There's a massive benzene spill floating down a river in China, they cut off the water supply to 3 million people in Harbin the other day, utter chaos ensued.

My roommate is from Harbin. Apparently, his family is completely stocked up on water for the next week.. But ya, who knows how long it will be before the water is competely safe?
No doubt it's fucked up the entire river ecosystem.

it took 10 days before the chinese government acknowledged that there was tonnes of benzene in the water. It's like the old days of communism again.
"Hey, Chernobyl exploded a week ago and there's some radiation leakage. You might close your windows."

We've actually had a benzene spill here the the US before. There was a tanker car full of benzene on a train that got derailed over a bridge. The car with benzene fell and ruptured. It created a huge gas cloud for miles around the area, and everyone was evacuated until the cloud dissipated. The people were returned, and laot have since developed irreversible medical problems. The chemical companies say there's nothing dangerous about benzene though. :L

@Sat
China's not about the safety or health of it's people, never have been. In fact the governing philosophy seems to be more to the opposite:

Their economic engine is running full tilt and they don't care if a few get chewed up in the machinery, it helps with the population control and dissident maintenace programs.
Almost every month I read about a mining explosion that takes 100 lives there.

Yes mining accidents are quite frequent there. Even under democratic rule, an economy growing that fast would almost inevitably take out a few enroute to industrialization.

I wonder if the river is dammed up so it won't be able to purify itself
