this may sound like an odd question, but where would you go to buy the following foods, a deli/health food shop or a big supermarket? can you buy any of these in an american supermarket?

hummus
taramasalata
olives
pesto
feta
ciabatta
fruit of sharon (orange fruit from israel, in case you've not heard of it)
salami (any kind)
parmesan (doesn't have to be the real thing)
baguettes
tzatziki
samosas
smoked salmon

i'm just trying to compare the contents of a european supermarket (you can buy all of the above in a bog-standard euro supermarket) and a US supermarket

this question was inspired by that scene in war of the worlds where tom cruise eats hummus without knowing what it is and his daughter tells him she got it from a health food shop...

I've got a few fancier supermarkets around me where all of that's available, but of course theres thousands of hot dogs, beer, and burger markets too

A lot of supermarkets have deli sections in them. I get meat and fish from those places rather than the horrid plactic-wrapped processed shite.

I'm sure most supermarkets would have everything I said no clue or wtf to in their "world market" department.

you can find most of those items. there's a local deli here called Carraba's that's got alot of those items too.

i don't visit a regular supermarket unless i'm only getting a few necesseties (tp, soap, etc)

whole foods is really expensive though since it's organic. any decent supermarket (publix, harris teeter, kroger, HEB, etc) will have most of that. you'd have to go to a specialty shop for some of the middle eastern stuff, if it's around at all. everything but the taramasalata, fruit of sharon (seriously, wtf?), tzatziki (might be easy to find... maybe under different name?), and samosas would be really easy to find.

edit: for the sake of comparison, just because it's there doesn't mean Joe Redneck eats it or knows what it is. hummus isn't exactly that exotic anymore though. surely there are people that can't identify foods that don't have "Mc-" before their names, but europe has their equivalent if you venture out of the big cities.

i haven't set foot in a tesco's for years, mr matalan. i don't like the cheap and nasty ambience. plus there's no tesco near where i live anyway

ok i threw that in as a curveball. i've never eaten it myself but sainsbury have it. btw it's fruit of sha-RON, not fruit of SHA-ron. some kind of israeli fruit made by lovingly blending dead palestinian babies with american blood money or someshit

Uhhhh. Its just wrong to say you can find all of them in a standard euro grocery shop (some are quite uncommon in standard dutch grocery shops) referring at least to the israel fruit and samosas. Mebbe they are at all UK shops? I also asked an office-mate from Italy and he has not heard of fruit of sharon. He asked me if it means "going down". lol.
