Ripping DVD

I got a free promo drumming DVD today which runs 16 minutes and it's nearly 1GB in size. What's the best and easiest way to rip it and can it be compressed to a smaller size? I have Bink and Smacker Rad video tools but not really sure how to use it.

Thanks very much fellas. Actually I thought DVD shrink was finished but it's still around. I just downloaded it.
To be honest I don't know. I want to rip the movie and post it at a cymbal forum but I need the file to be as small as possible as noone really wants to download 1gb for a 16 minute movie. Is it best as avi and can it be compressed from 968mb to say, half that size?

Help!
Using DVD2AVI I've converted to avi and it's 98mb from 986mb, which is great. Picture quality and framerate is good too. But no sound. I've messed around with the audio settings but can't get anything. When saving it showed me a compressor box and I selected DivX Mpeg-4 Low-Motion. How do I get sound?

AutoGK is the easiest yet. Use DVD Decrypter in IFO mode, rip the part you want (you'll know wich on the length of it), then open the IFO file in AutoGK. Select soundtrack (if there are multiples). You can select multiple soundstreams if wanted. Same with subs (only multiple if external, not if you want them encoded onto the vid), and then choose how the sound should be (be it AC-3, DTS or MP3) and DivX or XviD. Check teh guides page on
http://www.doom9.net. There is no alternative for easyness

You choose size also. There are predefined sizes (1/4th, 1/2 of CD or several for DVD or you can chose a % or your own size). Also resolution cna you choose or let it choose for you.

Thanks netrex but that's more headache than I need. I already sorted the video side of it, I just need to know which buttons to press for audio.

erm, if you used dvd2avi it should have demuxed the sound into either WAV or AC3. you can use virtualdub or nandub to reattach the sound to the video using direct streamcopy
or, you could check out one of the tutes here:
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/
which will have all the info you could possibly want about DVD->AVI conversion

having said that i'm not sure dvd2avi outputs an avi that's usable by virtualdub...

Ah, ok. On your link there's a link section at the bottom numbered 1 to 7. I just went for number 1. DVD2AVI - OGO modified version. Perhaps then number 5 will work, 5. DVD2AVI 1.77.4

I might have to check it out netrex, thanks.
amidy, I've ended up with a 104mb video no sound, and a separate 180mb audio file caled Sabian Promo AC3 T01 2_0ch 192Kbps 48KHz.wav
How can I do it so it converts and saves the avi and sound all in one? In audio settings, there's output method: demux (AC3 MPA DTS ), decode to wav ( AC3 LPCM ), demux all tracks (AC3 MPA DTS ), Track number 1-8 selectable, dolby digital decode, 48-44.1khz off, low, mid, high, ultra high, and normalisation. At the moment it' s set to decode to wav, and 48 to 44.1khz is off.

try opening the AVI, and then selecting process WAV and see if it puts them togeather.

if that dosent work, you will need to take the advice here and use VirtualDub, i can post tons of guides that will help you out.

After I click process wav an error box says ' support 16 bit 48KHz or 44.1KHz Stereo Linear PCM only!' I set the 48khz to 44.1khz to high but still says that.

Well that worked netrex so thanks. There were 2 movies that needed converting and each file took a long time to process. But it's all good. I'm using rad tools to compress the avis now and take the size down more as I don't know how or if AutoGK does that as well.
Cheers

Not sure I understand what you mean now. But you can set which size you want in several ways. Either compared to the size of a CD or DVD, or just set the size manually or use %. Just add several jobs if you want to test % and see which is best for you.

Yeah I downloaded dvdshrink, but does it convert to avis? That's all I wanted to do and then have the avis compressed to smaller downloadable sizes.

Alright, I'm trying it differently now. Tell me if this makes sense
From dvd decrypter, I have 2 IFO's associated with 2 VOB's. One vob is 722mb and the other vob is 254mb. That is the total volume of the DVD. Both these vobs make up the 2 movies from the DVD. With autogk, I'm now converting the IFO of the VOB which is 254mb. I've set custom size to 50mb. Does that mean it'll make a 50mb avi?
