What a great film. It totally captures the life of Johnny Cash. They believably bring him to the edge of his addiction without making it seem forced or "theatrical" (over the top) and his recovery is not cast as "heroic." Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon do as perfect job as anyone could ever do imitating two incredibly unique voices. I also liked how they put the Cashs' songs in the context of their lives instead of just dropping the popular hits in at random for the sake of putting music in it. The energy of the Folsom Prison scene made me want to be there.

I'd be interested to know if r00k went to see it because I think he's connected to the family in some way. I remember he posted pics a long time ago from a wedding or picnic or something that Johnny Cash was at.

I see old women didn't vote it very well on IMDB, probably because of the way June was portrayed (which would be a spoiler if I mentioned what that was).

Yup, I heard things, I heard some things. Saw Witherspoon interviewed on Charlie Rose last night (talking about the movie). Articulate and hot. I will definitely see it.

Not much of a Country fan. But I'll watch it anyway. I grew up with my dad listening to Cash and been familiar with his music for decades. Besides it just looks like it will be good.

Lol, yeah I've heard it. I actually like it. I do like a few of his comedic songs and that one.

If there's one thing Johnny Cash isn't, it's country

Not being a nitpicker, but how else would you classify his music?

He's not country when you compare him to the pop/shit quagmire that country music has become today, but he was country for his time IMO.

True. But that's what i meant by country. Not that new crap but the old stuff like Merle Haggard, Jimmy Rogers, etc.

I would probably put him more in the group with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings type of music. Not quite standard country but close enough.

i defintely put him in a group with the two you mentioned as well as Hank Williams. They epitomize the height of country whereas most other country is unbearable. Great song writers and genuine American white roots music.

If I were to listen to any country at all, it would be those I mentioned above. That's about the only style of country I can bear.

Yeah, I agree on Hank Williams and Waylon Jennings, but something about Johnny Cash makes me want to lump him more into "Americana" than a specific genre of music... He's the dark side of mom, baseball and apple pie.

Willie Nelson kind of straddles both categories like Cash
