Stuttering and disappearing sounds

Anyone having problems with stuttering sounds when the action gets heavy in a server?

Before I purchase another soundcard. Does Open AL improve the positional sounds in the game?

Will Open AL let me hear sounds coming from left or right? It would be helpful to know where the gun fire is coming from. At the moment everything sounds MONO.

It is supposed to help. I have the same problem, in a lg on lg fight my sound just cuts right out.

The Audigy 2 and above are supposed to be able to handle it, I just havent been able to get the drivers installed on my Audigy 2, need to reinstall windows anyway so I should know how it works by tomorrow...

Thanks for replying jester. I guess I will have to buy a new soundcard (I have 5 yr. old sb live at the moment :p ).

Please let me know if this problem is solved with the Audigy 2. Thanks again.

yeah im getting that as well. also, tested out the tmp maps last night and was getting constant 60fps but when i would turn say 180 degrees quickly it seemed like 10-15 degrees of that turn would disappear like a huge lag spike. i do play with a higher sense, 7 or 8 i think, which i've read about people having a similar problem with high mouse sens.

i get the same with audigy2. this may fall into the uncached items category.

any sound, image, or animation that does not get cached in memory gives you a lag spike due to your computer loading from the hardrive.

i'm sure it will be fixed by id in the first patch.

I also have this problem, quite horrid. Lag/stuttering on sound and sounds generally being either too loud or too quiet (Machine gun for example)

I have Audigy 2 zs and have these problems.

Normal surround sound is worse than Q3's, can't pinpoint enemy.

OpenAL is still in beta stage and causes major fps drops due to it using ~85% cpu in headphone mode. Even using latest soundcards. but the sound is excellent when it works and can pinpoint enemy.

Nice of Raven giving us two worthless sound options.

Thanks for the info Jenny. I guess I will hold off on a new soundcard. Hopefully ID will do something about this.

It's not fair to buy a Xi Fi soundblaster for $130.00 just to get the sound to work :)

Ok, I dont know exactly what soundcard I have, all I know is that when I reinstalled everything, formatted drive and all, the cd says Audigy 2, but for some reason the beta drivers for openAL wont install. It says there is no hardware to support the driver or something. Anyone know wtf is going on?

Heh, so yeah, my sound is even worse then it was before.

I want to send a big gg out to creative and raven. :dork:

Thanks for trying jester. I guess we just have to wait for a patch to fix this problem.

Sometimes I would rather have no sound at all rather than hear that loud machine gun sounds hehe.

Try setting s_force22khz to 1, it seems to make it sound a bit better all around...

I had this problem as well, but after increasing the s_maxChannelsMixed value it worked perfectly.

i did some research and found 2 different settings;
s_maxChannelsMixed 24 and
s_maxChannelsMixed 63
so, witch are the best ???

Heh, I think I have an audigy 2, but at the very least have an audigy and that command works at 63 and seems to be a bit better at placeing the sounds, dont know really though I will have to play more...

I assume it's the max number of sounds your soundcard will process at the same time. My setting is 32 and haven't had a problem yet. I use an very old sb live btw.
