Pretty interesting article...

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/15 ... _database/
A "24x7 national vehicle movement database" that logs everything on the UK's roads and retains the data for at least two years is now being built, according to an Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) strategy document leaked to the Sunday Times. The system, which will use Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), and will be overseen from a control centre in Hendon, London, is a sort of 'Gatso 2' network, extending. enhancing and linking existing CCTV, ANPR and speedcam systems and databases.
I like how at the end they say:
Don't worry though - if you haven't done anything wrong you've nothing to fear.
As if that's supposed to calm peoples nerves.

this was only ever a matter of time :(

extra-scary to see them trying to tie it into the dvla systems, which are typical of british national databases in that they're hopelessly inaccurate and far too expensive to run.

the amount of money that the uk wastes on shitty database technology is beyond a joke. it'd be cheaper and more effective to buy up a third-world country to handle our data, teach them all to read/write english, then give them 5 billion post-it notes and a really, really big fridge door.

besides, they can't start enforcing speed limits too heavily, everyone speeds, no-one in britain will get to work on time.

They've got 15 James Bonds armed with binoculars spotting cars driving on the british roads.

I don't mind as such what their doing, but when it starts linking to speeding I won't be happy. I don't even speed as such, but when driving through cities you spend half the time looking at the speedo which isn't exactly safe.
