I didn't hear about any fake stories, but yeah, those monstrous things are real.
When I was in Marine Combat Training, all my squad leaders were Gulf War vets, and they told us about these gigantic, translucent, greenish-white scorpions that they'd find. Apparently they're supposed to have some pretty nasty venom, but it was the sheer size of them that freaked people out.
