Now that I've upgraded to a new router which has wireless built in, I can't for the life of me figure out how to set password access for the network,
(I can't be arsed to connect up my Airport any more). I've worked out how to set which MAC addresses are allowed, but it's easier with a password. Why can't everything be as simple as the Mac? It's a netgear, by the way.

It's a separate section from where you set up the MAC address list. One is under Wireless, and the other is under Wireless Advanced Configuration, I believe - or something to that effect.

Then you simply have to choose the type of wireless security you want to use, and it will give you a place to set the password.

I'm not at home yet or I could look at my router and give you better directions.

WPA or WPA2 should give you the option of using a passphrase. stay away from using WEP unless it's the only security option.

what are the issues with routers anyway? one of my housemates wants to go halves on my so-far-exclusive-to-me broadband, but i've heard of so many hassles with routers, plus i have this feeling it'll fuck with eMule and i don't want to end up with a lowID. downloading is slow enough as it is

the only real hassle is dealing with port forwarding. since i got a new router (months ago) i'm the only one that's been able to log in to my ftp... luckily i'm the only person that needs to be mucking around on my home computer, but still.

What he said, but once you set the password it will encrypt it into a series of characters which will be used to connect the computers to the router.
