Strafe Jumping

Right, now Im sure its easy for you pros but I'm struggling a bit with strafe jumping in quake4. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right as I've never really played Quake MP games...

Should it in theory be possible without using the mouse as all to change direction or is the necessary to increase speed?

I've basically counted how many normal bunny hop style jumps it takes to clear a certain distance and then try strafe jumping. It definately takes less jumps this way but Im still not sure if Im doing it right.

Any tips would be appreciated... :)

for me, when i strafe jump, i get speed by moving the mouse in the direction of which key i press, ie, a i would move the mouse a lil left, d and a lil right. and usually get speed..

Strafe jumping speed is a relative thing, you go faster depending on how aggressively you execute each jump.

You can strafe jump without moving your mouse, but you will go significantly faster if you do move it.

Assuming you do it the right way because you can slow down by moving the mouse too. :)

You can also strafejump up to red in cos1_beta7b by holding only forward and using the mouse, good shit if you havnt seen it before ;)

Then there is sideways strafejumping holding strafe and alternating forward and back. Or... something like that.

Strafe jumping is way to easy in Q4, People barely turn around when I go by, almost like they never saw me in the first place

Is this so you can move forward whilst looking sideways or to gain more speed/bigger jumps?

That was only possible in CPMA style mods, not in regular Quake3.

You can do it with crouch sliding.

Yep. But you have to hit the ground for it to work don't you? Or does crouching help air control too?

I've been trying to hit the YA jump on the edge, but I can only get to the first big box right below it so far. I just can't use the stairs right when I do it. >:E

He was being sarcastic. No one evar does that. If you want to look backwards while moving, just strafejump backwards. It is almost the same thing.

Do you hold strafe after you've left the ground or before? Still doesn't feel right...

Aren't you supposed to move the mouse in the opposite direction?
So if you move left strafe you turn the mouse slightly right and vice versa? That's what I do anyway.

Maybe it's a symantics thing or maybe I just do strafejumping so automatically without thinking about it that I say the wrong things

It's best to learn circle jumps (CJ's) first. Press forward and add strafe, make a quick 90 degree turn but jump when you are at approx. 3/4th of the turn and then slowly drift off to 90 degrees and a bit past it.

That's the usual way to get initial speed for strafejumping. Example to do strafejumps: do a left CJ (hold forward and left and make the turn and jump); while in the air, change to RIGHT strafe, and just before landing and making the second jump, quickly flick your mouse +- 45 degrees (maybe a bit less) to the right. Between the 2nd and 3rd jump, change strafe to left and just before making the 3rd jump flick your mouse to the left again. And so on.

Make sure that after making a turn with the mouse, keep looking that way until you need to change. You need to do zig-zag strafes for maximum acceleration.

There are some guides for Q3 strafe jumping and other tricks. The website from clan 'The Jats' used to have a very good tutorial. I suggest you look around a bit, watch some Q3 demos. If you get decent frame rates in Q4, you can try this map.
