Do you restart your computer when you install programs or the like and it says "You must restart before you can use the software."? The question just occurred to me as I reinstall a bunh of stuff post-format, and I've restarted since first boot into windows (after installing windows updates).

So, when do you ?

Depends what.

Sometimes. Usually with updates if needed. Software? Not always, especially if I'm installing several at a time. Then I'll just do one reboot before using any of it.

Only drivers.

It's totally unnecessary for games in my experience. They probably just want to guarantee full perofrmance out of dumb users so they get less complaints about why it's running too slow with like 15 netscape browsers open on ytmnd whlie p2ping. Basically, they want to ensure a clean boot for playing performance, however the only program that seriously hinders my performance is zonealarm (which got nuked), openoffice quickstart and gaim

It depends on circumstances.

1: apps won't start really
2: apps start but add-ware not activated

In case 2, I won't restart.
IIRC, q3 is case 2 if directx is already installed.

Yep q3 works quite well without a reboot on install.

well, sort of. rebooting when it says so before using the program is just a good way to eliminate NOT rebooting as a reason for a crash or program error.

I know you and most people know that q3 can be manually copied and pasted from cd-rom media for it to be installed.
The installer is nothing more than a harm.

Just reminded me. I had a pop up for nearly one month if not more everytime I turned on my PC saying something like <<a new update is ready to install, do you want to continue or install it later>> I always refused to install it right away because I wanted to get to work on my PC right away, 'till one day, I finally clicked install...It took like 15 seconds at the most and had already finish
to install. Man

I agree. Just that I don't always do it immediately. Especially when doing a reinstall and I won't be using any of it until done. I'll install several things after the windows update reboots and get most of them in one shot.

if you don't restart after a windows update the damn thing keeps reminding you every 10 minutes or so, which gets highly annoying after a while

yeah Activision has a habit of not packing up their install files into archives only the installer can read. Also, Q3A has fs_cdpath too for running off the CD.

Q3A doesn't even require DirectX, neither does Doom3 (Well, at least I could run it in DirectX7 with no problems on init, gfx and sound. heheh (and yes I know it's an OpenGL game, but why do they slap the dx9 support on system requirements anyway))

LOL. I'm nearly like this. I reboot even if I'm not asked sometimes, depending on what's installed.

It's a throwback from older OS's. By XP they have most of the memory issues worked out, and most installation taks can be applied with the OS running as well. But I just can't get rid of the habit of rebooting after software/driver installs.

wrong: Q3A (and Doom 3) use DirectInput and DirectSound, both part of the DirectX package -- what they don't use, however, is Direct3D.

P.S. you want to have sex with gargoyles and something isn't quite right about that.

depends. some apps say you should restart while in fact it doesnt matter (a lot of games do this). the restart-dialogue is only there as a safeguard in case you installed summat like directx
