So I'm thinking of getting an Apple 30" LCD

These things are so friggin' ridiculously huge. :icon28: I stopped by an Apple store the other day and happened to see one of these behemoths in action and....well I wanna get one; not just for gaming purposes, but mostly graphical (Lightwave, Maya) and video/sound editing (Premiere, ProTools) actually. The retail price of $2500 is well, rather steep, but I think it may be worth it. Or not.
I'm somewhat afraid of my card (PNY Verto 6800GT) not being compatible with it, as apparently is requires a Double-Link DVI. My card has 2 DVI ports, but nobody knows for certain if they're Double-Link or not (even the manufacturer is confused); I've read stories of PNY's 6600's (!) working with the 30" inch, but not the 6800's. Oddness.
I don't know if I should maybe wait for a price drop or try to get it now (and put myself in debt). Thoughts, suggestions?

if you use it double duty for movie watching i could see some justification for that price.

pfft, 30in lcd... buy a 42in LCD tv and you have yourself a TV and a monitor...works great for me, plus with something that size you wouldnt be able to sit behind your conventional computer desk...

But seriously, it actually ran on an Apple GeForce 6800 Ultra, which is just about the same card I have except for Dual-Link DVI capability (or so it seems).

I've read a great many bad reviews on these. Also, I heard the resolution on these is ass? Give me your thoughts. :icon27:

If you don't actually own a mac, you run in to problems because most of the screen adjustment is done via the system control panels, not knobs on the monitor. You'd probably be able to find the same actual LCD in another monitor for less moolah.

I really want a 30"....badly....but I cannot justify $2499 for a monitor right now.

i'm not the one who wants a 30"

the 30" is down to 2299 academically priced, but of course there's the question of your card being DDL, which would cancel that part out

I have the Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL, and can support two 30" displays...so there! Hah!

I'd want 2 24" displays, but that would fuck up my symmetry for movie watching unless i mounted them vertically rather than horizontally
Posted: Wed Oct 26, 2005 6:10 am
by Canis
...or just watch movies on one display.

That's the symmetry thing... they have to be vertically mounted otherwise my display wont be exactly in the middle of my speakers

ah! I was thinking about splitting the video and all that...heh. Well, they're VESA compliant, so mount'em!

Yes, of course. What I meant to say that's an Apple-only (or rather Mac-only) card. :icon26:

True, but that wouldn't be really useful in terms of graphic-design; calibration is key.
Playing Q4/pr0n on my wall would rock, though. :icon14:

Which, as I pointed out, doesn't work properly if you're using an Apple monitor with a PC as colorsync isn't available.
