Is it a straightforward process to take stuff saved on a DVR and put it on your PC? I'm thinking in terms of hi-def science videos that I might record and then save on my laptop for use in the classroom.

Video out on the DVR to the Video in on your comp?

i mean saving the files from the DVR to the comp.

remove the drive and fix the mpgs?

Not sure, but I would assume that DVR's would use a proprietary format to prevent people from copying things.

I have a moxi DVR from my cable company with a couple of USB ports on the front. I'm wondering if I can grab stuff off it through that. Only problem is I don't have a USB cable that is the same on each end, so that kinda tells me that it's probably not what those UBS ports on the front of the moxi box are for.

I think the DVR's computer interfaces are just for controlling the thing, not for transfering data. I believe folks copy from their DVR to their computer by setting up a program to record video, and then replaying the video from the DVR to their computer directly. They then compress it and do whatever to get it on DVD and such...not sure though, as I dont have a DVR.

some DVRs have built in ethernet port.
i bought myself a dvr/hdd recently and whilei was at the store they had this gue dvr from Kiss with built-in ftp server and gigabit lan.
cost 400 bones more though

you could also just burn it on a dvd-rw ofcourse

with mine i had to use firewire cable to transfer the video with sound. usb did it, but at a really poor frame rate

Its trivial to transfer from DVR-PC and back again with the ReplayTV series Just an Ethernet connection

i have the dvr now. this thing is great.
