$165 and you can 'unlock' more pipes (gay)
newegg'd
newegg'd
Some cards are manufactured the same way. One example i know of was the 9500 and the 9800. To save on costs, they use the same board but they disable some of the pipes to match the lower spec, saving have to do new batches of different boards.Transient wrote: edit: WTF is "unlocking" anyway?

Apollo 6800 Geforce 6800 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X
I'd rather get a 6600GT 256MB for $20 more, since I don't like to overclock/unlock anything (I'm paranoid).

From what I understand they are the same 6800 GT/ULTRA chips, but didnt pass the 6800 GT/ULTRA testing so they cut a few pipes to lower strain on the chip and call it a 6800. From what I understand that is also why you can get lucky with the unlock, or get a lot of problems with the unlock. Most people get lucky, but I've heard a good few getting errors in there graphics that are to hard to ignore, or just plain crippling.Massive Quasars wrote:If these cards are essentially better cards crippled, why are they sold for a lower price? They wouldn't seem to save on the manufacturing of the cards versus their more expensive models? How much of the cost of the cards is R&D?
