Assuming the pipelines work, yes.

Good buy all the same. The Q4 gods are pleased at your cash sacrifice.

Was it this one?

Apollo 6800 Geforce 6800 128MB 256-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X

I'd rather get a 6600GT 256MB for $20 more, since I don't like to overclock/unlock anything (I'm paranoid).

edit: WTF is "unlocking" anyway?

Some cards are manufactured the same way. One example i know of was the 9500 and the 9800. To save on costs, they use the same board but they disable some of the pipes to match the lower spec, saving have to do new batches of different boards.

"unlocking" is the process of re-enabling these previously disabled pipelines.

My definition is a little dodgey, so if anyone feels like it they can correct me...

read this
http://firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_6800_unlocking/

the 6600 is 128-bit

6800 are 256-bit = better

As far as I know all 6800's are already unlocked and using all 16 pipes. They just come at different clock speeds and memory sizes.

EDIT: nevermind I was thinking of the GT's.

If these cards are essentially better cards crippled, why are they sold for a lower price? They wouldn't seem to save on the manufacturing of the cards versus their more expensive models? How much of the cost of the cards is R&D?

From what I understand they are the same 6800 GT/ULTRA chips, but didnt pass the 6800 GT/ULTRA testing so they cut a few pipes to lower strain on the chip and call it a 6800. From what I understand that is also why you can get lucky with the unlock, or get a lot of problems with the unlock. Most people get lucky, but I've heard a good few getting errors in there graphics that are to hard to ignore, or just plain crippling.
