Do you know about domain name registration and all?

How can I make sure that when I register a domain name for as low as 10$ per year that it will be safe, not violated and valid?
That the company won't say it's already taken and I have to buy it.
There are plenty of companies offering this service, how can I make sure they are ligit? Do you know if there is a type of CRTC controlling them?

I've only used their domain registration but they do let you change all the settings for the domain which some places don't.

Thanks Denz. Do you know if there is a type of registery that they have access, like the one we use for houses, to know that the domain name is not already registered or how can they know it in between companies?

Check out the InterNIC registrar list. It lists all the "official" domain name registrar companies in the world as opposed to sub-registrars (people who help you and other people buy domain names).
