Where would one go to learn all about quake?

Hi, never played any Quake game before. Quake 4 is my first attempt at playing this goofy game. Is there a decent place to go to get educated on the lingo and everything else? I keep seeing stuff like CPMA and cvar and I have no clue what it is. I'm a UT player so if you would like to entertain yourself by calling me a spamming noob, have fun, just leave some info as well. Thanks.

You can start here:
http://www.quake3world.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=7

BTW, welcome to the boards "noob."

edit: Check the Beginner's Discussion FAQ link in that forum for lots of info.

If you get involved and want to learn more about cvars and Q3 physics and such, check the UpsetChaps guide:

Some reference information here: http://quake4world.com/

We're still getting up and running though, so there's no complete beginners guide yet :(

I've been playing Quake since the beginning and I'm not exactly sure what CPMA is either. I googled it and found this from GotFrag.Com:

"CPMA is a Quake 3 mod. The best way to describe it is an amalgamation of QuakeWorld's air control and speed, Q2's double jumps and Q3's weaponry. It also has very good netcode, which makes playing as a HPB an enjoyable experience."

You don't need to know anything about that to have a fun Quake 4 experience.

Cvars are settings you can tweak in the game like your binds for weapons, graphics, sound, network, and the like. There are thousands of cvars and to be honest, they aren't always documented as well as we would all like, and what ends up happening is the community will collectively do research and compare notes. If you look on this board, you'll see many threads with people comparing config (CFG) files, cvars, and other settings.

A big thing for competitive players in the Quake community is to devise a configuration file that yields graphics with a high framerate and also good visibility so spotting enemies is painless and easy. The better those settings are, the better your chance of winning.

Best of luck.

Hi dude and welcome to quake.

Here are a few links to get you started and to help you understand what quake's all about.

Thresh's Quake Bible

Upset Chaps' Quake 3 guide

Planet Quake 3

QuakeCon's website

Now, some of these wesites contain advanced stuff and commands but I figure you could always use those links later when you really get deeper into the quake universe.

Oh and don't forget..

Welcome to the real world, kid...the light is bright.

Anyone know if the defrag mod will be ported to Quake 4? Maybe something like it? I tried to find out but defrag's forum is down.

Duhard, thanks for the links.

Don't mean to start a fight on the internet, Quake is fun and all, it's a good time killer, but I can't take it seriously.

Where should I start digging my grave?

EDIT: No really, I mean it. We've been over UT vs Quake more times than I can count.

DO NOT START WITH THE UT IS BETTER THAN QUAKE OR VICE VERSA SHIT.
