Question for BF2 people

What is the trick to getting the helicopter to hover right above the flag (or any spot) at a relatively stationary altitude and position?

I can't do this - because I am constantly having to adjust the throttle up and down and tipping slighty forward or backward...

If anyone has the time to give me pilot lessons on an empty server, I'd appreciate it...

I'd like to be able to fly the chopper well before I put the game away for q4.

It just takes practice to be able to do it, you have to find the correct spot before it stops moving, often it's still moving but very little so you can sit there for a few minutes before you crash or fly off. At least for me.

I just bought a joystick yesterday, so I haven't even tried with it yet. But I was perfectly fine doing that with the mouse + kb.

The throttle on the attack choppers is really sensitive, so you do just keep tapping it (though the joystick I just bought has a throttle, so I'll have to figure out the right placement for it).

The movement (with mouse at least) is extremely easy.

Honestly, I think the joystick only benefits flying in a jet...but I thought I'd try one out.

Depending on the throttle.. 25-40% throttle..

Here is a good way to learn how to hover, take the two lines on either side of the crosshair and line it up with a part on the ship. This way you can judge your attitute.

I decided to park my helio in the belly of the carrier. hehe :)

So why Super Cobras and not Apaches I wonder?

There's 2 attack choppers, the others might be Apaches...I dunno.

Only the Army flies the Apache, the Marines fly the Cobra.

I knew that. I really did. I guess I just assumed there was an Army aspect in BF2.

I managed to do the carrier landing thing too....heh.

As for the attitude, I notice that my chopper rolls slightly left and right even if I am just going up and down with the throttle, not trying any attitude adjustment.

My config with the chopper is basic joystick stuff -
Tilt forward and back with the stick to tilt the chopper forward and back
A rolls left, D rolls right
and then the stick is used to turn left and right as well...

When is it appropriate to use the roll left and roll right control on the chopper?

What about configs for planes and choppers? Any specific tweaks to sensitivity or yaw or whatever that are useful?

God, after a couple hours of faggotry on about 10 different servers looking for at least a decent and competetive game that wasn't filled with spawn raping vehicle whores, teams of folks running in 100 different directions at once, and all the good clan players joining the same team to pad their stats even more, and the continual stream of people calling others hacks (apparently there are a bunch of them now?), and shooting a sniper from point blank in the back with a shotgun and watching him get up and turn around, and the fact that I am a highly trained special operative who can't sprint more than 30 feet without having to catch my breath....i am really trying to like this game - it's great when you do have that RARE game with balanced teams and a battle that goes right down to the wire and utilizes actual basic military strategy and teamwork, but it feels more like an exercise in futility than anything else when I am trying to find a good game on a good server.

So...maybe not being able to fly the chopper isn't going to be such a big deal after all.

Quake 4 cannot arrive soon enough.

EDIT: Yea, just did some looking - there are loads of hacks - all the usual wallhacks, bots, etc...
one site even keeps updated as to whether they have been detected yet or not.

Try using the mouse the keyboard. All you have to do is level the chopper (your crosshair should be in line with the horizontal lines), release any movement keys (or you can tap w as you'll notice that you'll slowly lose altitude), and you should automatically hover.

I've yet to see any evidence of hacks, and as you can tell, I play quite a bit:

What I hate the most is the Kamakazi foggots. Loading down a jeep with C4 to ram into a tank, flying the jet into a transport helicopter or ramming one attack chopper with another will all get you a swift ban for the night on our server. I know that there are times when vehicles accidentally collide and that's ok. But when the same fool is doing it multiple times, they're gone. This is obviously a juvinile tactic used by newbs that suck a BF2 to score points, but it's not the way the game was intended to be played.

I admit, I've accidentally done it many times. Just didn't pull up fast enough while firing upon a blackhawk. :(

Yeah, it happens to everyone. I have a problem with getting greedy while diving in the attack chopper. I'm trying to get that last missle to hit the target and end up not being able to get the chopper to pull out of the dive. Though I almost never end up crashing into my target. I usually hit the ground or the surronding trees. :icon32:

My problem is manuevering away from an attacking helio or plane and
them running into me. Then complaining that, I RAN INTO THEM.

I've been in the same situtations as both of you. Both of your
scenarios sound soo familiar. These happenings in the game later
show who are the more respecting players of the game and who are
the kids that can't stand being killed when they think they are better.

*sigh*

It's a kick ass game playing with a good bunch of guys that really
do PLAY-IN-TEAMS! Hehehe.

As for chopper flying. My words would be looked over so *pfft* ;)

Cyas on BF2 soon!

*waves* Nice parking job Denz!

You have a PM by the way Denz. :icon10:

*edit* by the way. Nice changes on the maplist Denz :D-:icon14:

Than I guess the bots, wallhacks, d3d hacks, etc., that are all available for download are not used by anyone anywhere?

Dude, try Planetside. Faggot monthly suckscription, yeah I know.. but it sounds like the game you're really looking for.

If you can get over the futuristic setting, long initial setup time, and monthly subscription, the teamplay aspects of the game are completely, utterly unsurpassed.

Also you have an effective stats/advancement system on 2 levels. Battle stats gets you points to spend on a LOT of different gear, and leadership stats can work you up all the way to the point where you can call in airstrikes. LARGE airstrikes.

The one thing that I dont like about chopper flying is that the game doesnt appear to have an autocentre function.

I hat ethe way that instead of the chopper leveling out on its ownyou constantly have to adjust. And dont tell me "thats what real choppers do" cause no-ones ever flown a real one from here.

You can be sure a "real" chopper doesn't auto level. Otherwise, what would you need the pedals and stick for?

There will always be hacks for popular games, not much you can do and I bet quake4 will have a ton of them.

Find servers that have admins playing or clan servers, they ussually take care of the cheaters better then punkbuster.

Um to manouver...... when not at auto center :icon27:

I cant believe that ANY helicopter doesnt have auto centering..... its just so retarded. I mena why wouldnt you?

you wanna go forward you oush the stick forward when you wanna stop you let go of the stick it goes back to center and as such so does the helicopter. You wanna hover you just let go of the stick to center it...... it makes much more sense.

You'd have to pull back on the stick to correct the forward movement. Otherwise you crash into the ground.

How stupid would you have to be to let go of the stick in a moving chopper?
