ATI Doom3 scores 'up to 35%' with AA enabled

Came across this and thought it was interesting, apprently this tweak will apply to all OpenGL games in CATALYST 5.11. Which means it should also apply to Quake4.

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=3668
ATI Technologies have this morning made a tool available to HEXUS which supposedly improves scores in most OpenGL games when antialiasing is enabled at high resolution. Improvements 'of up to 35%' in Doom3 are explicitly mentioned by sources within ATI. The tool seemingly changes the way the graphics card maps and accesses board memory to better deal with handling AA sample data.

As well as supporting Doom3, the tool is said to increase performance in all OpenGL titles when using antialiasing. With Doom3 the poster child for that graphics API, ATI's willingness to promote the increases in that application in particular are understandable.

The fix will shortly be rolled into CATALYST 5.11 according to ATI sources and a beta drop of that driver will be made available for testing in due course, before the final WHQL driver from Terry Makedon's CATALYST team is made available for public download in November.

To little to late. OpenGL is a dying app on the home PC gaming front.

Says who? It's not as common, but many games still use it.
Quake 4 (and any other upcoming DooM 3 engine game), Serious Sam 2...

The fact that you can only name the Doom 3 engine and Serious Same 2 says alot. On top of that, companies aren't exactly lining up to use the Doom 3 engine.

Also from what I understand doom 3 was writen with DX9 like functions.

DirectX works for Mac and Linux? DirectX works with Java? DirectX used on any console other than Xbox?

OpenGL has never had a large market share and don't see it dieing anytime soon. Shit the 2.0 specs are just starting to become standard.

Last time i checked, Mac and Linux had DOOM 3, WoW, UT2004.. Wow.. Huge library..

And its not like it matters, by the time ATI drivers get put out for linux, and Mac gets a version of this card, a whole new series will be out..

SOAP, quit trying to bash Macs. You clearly don't have enough knowledge of the subject to do so.

And the comment about me being only able to name Doom 3 engine games....what else matters?

Seriously though, :id: engines are always important. Many people will use it. Most of the games that do will be major hits. It's reason enough to need good OpenGL performance.

Windows will slowly kill off OpenGL if it releases Vista. 95% of commerical games that are made for the computer are made for Windows!

If you are going to make a fancy looking game then you will be forced to use DirectX as the OpenGL on vista will not only run on top of DirectX but it will also be the old version of OpenGL!

So why would any developer who wants to make a new game and sell a lot waste time with OpenGL? It sucks but it's true, it also means less Linux ports.

By the time Vista is out they will be considered old games, I'm talking about next generation games.

Don't get me wrong here. I love OpenGL and all but I think it's going the same way as Glide, but not for the same reasons as Glide.

Why are you talking about next generation games. They're fixing this generations hardware for this generations games ("This generation" being Quake 4, COD2, Quake Wars, Serious Sam II, etc). Sounds like a great idea to me.

I never said this is not a good idea, I was the one who posted this. I just said that it looks like OpenGL will die as a result of Windows Vista.

It'll die as a result of support for it dying. And that's not happening thanks to things like this.

Why do you say Vista will kill it off?

Apple already uses the X600 and X600XT GPUs. Its only a matter of putting the X800 on a board, which wont take long at all...
